Is there any point in playing JRPGs?

Foolish mortal. Of course there's no point to playing JRPGs. Battle awaits us!

I think the first Grandia is worth playing. The story isn't messy and convoluted, the characters are pretty loveable and not all angsty wusses, and the battle system is actually pretty strategic and engaging. The magic system is also nice. It is customizable but in such a way that you can't end up with every character having all the spells.

Give it a shot, and you may find it worthwhile.

I also recommend the tactical RPGs like Shining Force, Fire Emblem, and Tactics Ogre, since they tend not to have random, throw-away battles and the tactical layouts lend themselves to thinking and not just hitting the attack button.

There isn't much of a point in playing games you don't like, but I still enjoy JRPGs, so there is a point for me in playing them.

Anyone who plays games for the stories is doing it wrong.

No one should play Secret of the Stars. It's not even fun to play "ironically" - it just flat out sucks.

Play Falcom games.

I've played fire emblem before and enjoyed it a lot. And as for Grandia that description seems more along the lines of what I'm looking for do you know of any goodports because I don't have a Saturn.
