I know I'm late to the party, but I just got out of Oblivion, and it was a really cool movie. The mystery was quite well done, and they did a good job of not revealing the story in the trailers.

Also saw a trailer for Pacific Rim, which features GlaDOS as the AI of the giant robots.

Star Trek: Into Darkness

My expectations for this one were pretty high and I wasn't the least bit disappointed. Those of you who hated the previous film might find this one a bit more palatable since the visual aesthetic is somewhat closer to TOS and the story matches the tone of classic Trek a lot more.

I wouldn't say that it's better than Wrath Of Kahn, but I would say that it's equal to it. It's true that the actor playing Kahn bears no resemblance to Ricardo Montalban physically, but he did sound remarkably like him vocally, which is good enough for me. Also, the explanation for how Kahn showed up years earlier than in TOS matched my prediction and makes logical sense so kudos for that. Finally, the ending leaves you begging for a new TV series, so I wish Paramount would quit playing around and do one. All in all, another great effort.

The only way that the story matches classic trek is because they tried to literally mash up Star Trek II and VI.

There was zero tension in the film. Any attempts to add tension was immediately relieved by resolving the issue less then 5 minutes after the problem arises.

The female addition served zero purpose. She was neither love interest, nor did she further the plot in any way. I know you may say, "But Bogus! She opened the missile?" Your right she did....by ripping it's guts out haphazardly, a job that anyone could do. "But Bogus! She was the main bad guy's daughter!" So? That didn't help or hurt the situation in any way. Her only role, as far as I could see was to scream when her dad's head got squashed in.

And Benedict Cumberbatch....lets talk about him for a second shall we?

A lot of people were complaining about his acting and how it was bad. I don't really think that he was to blame for this. He was given crappy exposition about his identity that was both long-winded, confusing and completely contrived. It was hamfisted, because they placed an "important" monologue on a character who is in a plain, empty white room with nothing to interact with, making it melodramatic and dull. Kahn served no purpose to the film either! Was he a bad guy? Why? After he saves Kirk et all. on Klingon, you had to wonder if he was really the bad guy. Is that really the case? He references one single line about the role of him and his crew and that should establish him as an antagonist? Oh....no...instead they are relying on a film that many people who are seeing the film would not understand(Wrath of Kahn)! His role was to build tension just because it was Kahn. That doesn't cut it.

They were too busy running around from location to location in an attempt to keep things exciting and instead lost the ability to build characters and story. This method worked in the first film, because the antagonist was pretty simple and clear, but here they were trying to follow the same pattern, but include complexity that could only be shoved in.

I can continue...but man...there are so many things wrong about this film, outside of the silly call-backs. Those I can stand. It was just all the fat and gristle they added to the film that had zero relevance to the story and even the action sequences.

Also I want to say that this isn't an indictment on you or anything. People can honestly like whatever they like and it has zero effect on my views of them as a person. I just could not stand the film personally.

Working as a Linux Administrator, I've had nerds blabbering non-stop about this. Sometimes I have to put on my headphones so I don't hear any spoilers. This film seems pretty polarizing. A couple of the Admins are the kind of people that can cite of quotes from episodes and give the episode name and number. One absolutely loved the film, and the other was disgusted by it. I hear the same thing through-out the building.

It's a shame that I will most likely not be able to go see this in theaters. We might be able to squeeze it in during our vacation, as we will have several people available to watch the kid. Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Yeah the Mass Effect spinoff movie was pretty decent.

Pacific Rim definitely looks like Transformers done right, pretty stoked for that one.
