Except that it isn't necessary to have seen those other films to understand the Avengers so it isn't a sequel by any typical understanding of the word. It was designed to work as a stand alone that viewers would get more out of if they'd seen the related films.

Watched RoboCop last night with my girlfriend, who had never seen it before. She wasn't a big fan of the gore in it, but she enjoyed it overall. And the Old Detroit of the future is sadly not far off the mark...

I just finished watching The Office finale. And for some reason it made me thing about the "standing on its own" thing. I think, like a series finale, there's no reason The Avengers SHOULD have to stand on its own. I guess it doesn't fit into the usual format of what a film does, but it's a conclusion in the same way that a series finale is. If I threw the final episode of The Office at someone who'd never seen the show before, I wouldn't expect it to be meaningful to them in any way. I'm sure they'd be able to understand most everything that went on though.

I don't think you were arguing with this point anyway, just an observation that maybe a movie doesn't have to "stand on its own". We just go in to movies expecting them to because most do, but our rules are different for different mediums.

I just got back from the Seattle International Film Festival openening gala where they showed Joss Whedon's version of Much Ado About Nothing. It was even better than I thought it would be! They make Shakespeare fun.

I also got to see a panel with Joss Whedon, Alexis Denisof (Wesley from Buffy/Angel), Amy Acker (Fred from Angel, Whiskey on Dollhouse), Nathan Fillion (Malcolm Reynolds on Firefly), and Clark Gregg (Agent Phil Coulson in The Avengers).
