If you have trouble though, keep in mind:

The sword itself is not in that area. However, that's the direction to go to put you on the path to finding the item you need for it. You're looking for a Ruin.

So one thing I have decided to do in this play through, is to not use any stat boosting items until after promotion. Between the boost items and the mythril it is causing inventory problems.

Yeah, that goes away once you get the Caravan and can store your items.

Backtracking completed and now heading West. Thanks for the help! Realized from Jmustang's post that I also missed picking up KIWI. I think I need to explore a little more instead of heading straight for the next battle all the time.

When I played for the first time back as a kid I missed kiwi too. Also make sure to go back to birdo and do the scene required to grt skreech.

Fortunately for you, kiwi isn't that strong of a character.

I just picked up Kiwi myself and feel a bit disappointed with it, is it worth keeping and leveling up or should I set it aside so other characters reap the EXP? 7 HP and low attack, despite the nice defense is a bit of a downer for starting stats at level 7. I've seen too many games have characters like this only to turn them into monsters later though..

Kiwi does literally become a monster later. He's not that good either way, in my experience, though. I get the sense that he can be made to be very good in the later game, but he did make for a pretty good tank in the early game for me, with a couple of hp boosting items.

I beat the Kraken.
