This talk of a Racketboy TvC beat down saw me dust this game off last night. This game remains as amazing as ever. The character pool is about the best that Capcom has ever produced (only 3 street fighters!) and the gameplay, graphics, and sound are the best the Wii had to offer. Cant wait to Voltekka Sevin in the face.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Two more games taken out, both of which were rather interesting.
Crimson Shroud is a turn based RPG which takes a lot of ideas from tabletop RPG gaming, both in its mechanics, where there is a lot of dice rolling, and its aesthetics, which use figurines to represent your characters, who don't animate and bob about when attacking and being attacked. The story makes up the majority of the game, and it's fairly wordy, and a bit cheesy in how over the top and verbose it is sometimes, but it fits the feel of the game. The game is just the right length to sustain its simple mechanics too, clocking in at 5 to 7 hours. Overall, it as an interesting experiment, but there was one section of the game that just let it down terribly for me, enough to lower my opinion of the game quite a bit - about a third of the way through, you need an item to progress. Not only is it not hinted at where you get said item, but it turns out to be from a random drop from a certain enemy. A certain enemy who in turn only appears as a random reinforcement in a certain battle. I refought the same battle over and over, dozens of times, and only encontered the enemy I needed three times, and only one of those times did he drop what I needed - it took 2 hours of grinding before I could proceed. In a game that took me 7 hours to beat. The story comes to a rather abrupt conclusion too, although I hear it has a different ending on New Game +, plus a little extra content. I feel like all the Guild 01 games are very interesting experiments, but they've all been flawed too. This is the best of the 3, and the most unique feeling too, but you might want to consider if it's your sort of thing before investing.
To The Moon was a game I picked up from Good Old Games this weekend on offer after hearing a lot of positive opinions on it. After playing through the whole thing in one sitting, I have to agree. As a game, I feel it's better than the sum of its parts, mainly down to the captivating story which involves you going into a dying mans memories to engineer them into granting his wish of going to the moon. At first I didn't like the way the game controlled or felt, which I put mainly down to its RPG Maker roots, but I quickly got over it once the story kicked into gear. The mechanics of the 'game' part of To The Moon are honestly lacking - most of the game you spend finding 5 things in each of Johnnys memories to open a portal to an earlier one. This is a pretty dull mechanic, and some of the items or events are never really explained why they are objects that help unlock his older memories - it seems to mainly be a way to make you explore the stage of Johnnys life so you dont miss anything, which I felt could've been done better. Unlocking the portals involved a tile flipping puzzle each time aswell, which just felt like the developer was trying to get more 'gamey' elements into an experience which didn't have much. They just felt out of place and unnecessary. The story was interesting and charming, and the main characters, whilst seeming obnoxious early on, became very likeable over the course of the game. There was one twist towards the end I felt was a bit of a pointless stretch to try and explain something away, but the ending was awesome, if not exactly the conclusion I wanted or expected. It's a game I think everyone should try though, which is why I've done my best to avoid talking about the story much at all in my thoughts here - it's more of an interactive storybook than a game, but it's great at it.
Next Up: Wild Arms, I hope. It doesnt seem to want to end >_<. Then Summer Games Challenge time!

Re: Games Beaten 2013
Heretic on PC.
Love the game. Just recently downloaded it off of Steam and it brought back a lot of nostalgia. From the looks of the map that shows in-between levels, though, the game seemed to skip one building. Is that normal, or is there something I have to do to get there?
I've since started HeXen, and despite all the improvements, I like Heretic better. I like the FPS style of gameplay it offered. There's too much melee combat in HeXen. Yeah, there's the mage, but it still doesn't feel the same. Oh well, it's still a fun game and I'm enjoying it as well.

Was this in episode 1, City of the Damned? That building is probably the secret level, The Graveyard.BurningDoom wrote:Heretic on PC.

And I gotta say, I also prefer Heretic to HeXen. That's not to say I dislike HeXen, but it just doesn't have the nostalgic joy that playing Heretic gives me.

11. Super Street Fighter II Turbo (Sat)
No noiseredux Games Beaten list would be complete without a Street Fighter. So let's start with this. I have heard it said that the Saturn port (as part of Street Fighter Collection) tones down the difficulty a bit from the arcade, and I'm going to say this is probably true. I breezed thru most of the roster without losing a fight - but then lost twice to Vega which rattled me. Then once to Bison. But I feel like it was just this weird "oh damn Vega's fast!" that just threw me for a loop and took me out of my groove. I should be able to 1CC this port no problem.

Decided to give a run through SSF2 to compare to Turbo and they do feel like subtly different games. I guess I'm more used to Turbo's speed. But even minor changes, like Chun-Li's birdkick charging down in SSF2 and charging back in Turbo. Or the fact that Turbo omits the challenges between stages.

Put Bad Street Brawler on the back burner for now, as, well...the game kinda sucks. I beat JP with the raptor, and although I enjoyed the game, the ending was a let down. Might beat it again with Dr. Grant for the hell of it.

This month's TR was a series I had no experience with, and a perceived vision of low quality I had associated with it. After I played through and finished it, I can see now why this game got such high ratings when it was released and why it is such a popular franchise in the UK. It had platforming and adventure elements that reminded me of Gods, another European-developed game with the same type of genre I enjoyed very much. It's a shame many are missing out on a pretty unique experience this month.
