We had an open bar for the rehearsal dinner, beer and wine for the reception. We also had a ton of hors d'oeuvres and "carving stations" at the reception, but I had a fever of over 103 on my wedding night (flu) so I didn't eat a thing.

Families didn't have money to pay for one, and if we did it, I would still be paying on it.

I find weddings to be way overpriced just because it is a wedding. I think the 5-20k that couldve potentially gone into a wedding was to be much better spent elsewhere than a 1 night celebration.

I was sick, kinda, at my wedding. I had a plugged up ear and I couldn't hear out of it. In our wedding vid, you can actually see me pulling my right ear during the ceremony. And you can hear a 'pop'. It was so gross.

Even grosser, I got some drops afterward that helped me get rid of it. YIKES. That stuff was GROSS.

Although I was married in Orange County, North Carolina, my wedding reception as catered by Parker's Barbecue. The food was AWESOME, and it was a real treat to the many out-of-state guests. The best part, however, was the bill...$1500, including tip, to feed approximately 200 people.

EDIT: The only problem I had with the food at my wedding was that it was too good. Seriously, my wife and I stuffed ourselves but simply did not have the stomach capacity - or time - to eat more...it really was a tragedy.

Our venue was an extra 5k to have alcohol, then 10k minimum on drinks. So an extra 15k to have alcohol, and since we were paying about 22k for the rest of the wedding, well that kinda got the kibosh. Granted they also wanted 2k for a DJ and we did not get to choose the music. Sadly our hors d'oeuvres were rained out by a freak shower - so much wasted cheese...

That cost is mind boggling to me, and I am glad that my wife and I planned our wedding on a shoe-sting budget.

We were very lucky to have our own venue (i.e., my father's barn) for the reception; so, we could do whatever we wanted for food alcohol, etc. Having thrown a few parties in college, we knew the best thing to do was to make a few tremendous alcohol purchases - the ones that require you to obtaina special permit to transport the liquor - and we stocked our own bar. My father enlisted a few of his friends - one of who had worked as a professional bar tender - to serve drinks. The guests did not drink nearly as much as we anticipated, however; so, my wife and I ended up with an extremely well-stocked bar (and multiple cases of PBR...) after the wedding. Accordingly, we through a party when we got back to Charlotte.

Event planning is full of cost like that, ie most convention centers will charge you $300-500 a day for a projector. One of the places I use to work would charge you $20 a day for an extension cord. I did event planning in Atlanta as a side gig for almost ten years. I am supremely jealous of your reception prfsnl_gmr. I wanted to do something like that but we could not make it work in our area.

Having a free "venue" made all the difference for us. Without that, we could not have afforded much more than the wedding licenses!
