I installed a couple codecs, tried a couple players and several different disks but no dice: My DVDs refuse to work, all they show is the first "intro" video and then a blank screen.
Any ideas?

Even with VLC.
However, if I open them manually the videos do play, though with heavy distortion in both video and audio.
Weird

Could it be a problem with the actual DVD player?

Are you certain you have ALL the most current drivers for your system?
Sorry, my experience with Windows is a bit dated so I will be of no further use.
[Install Gentoo

Some things to try - update your DVD Drive's Firmware.
Set your DVD Drive's region to the correct one for your country.
Start IMGBurn and see if it's console lists any problems with your hardware or software.
Check that no filters/hooks are interfering with data transfer - I've put some utilities for that and other CD diagnostics on my ftp:
ftp://sw:[email protected]:6872/CD/
I use KMPlayer - No codec installation necessary, and better (IMO) picture on DVD playback than commercial players like PowerDVD.

After spending months tinkering with Gentoo, I said fuckit and switched back to LMDE.jinx wrote:Are you certain you have ALL the most current drivers for your system?

Proudly wearing my Slackware shirt as I hack away at these CentOS servers at work for the next 20 minutes. I also have a variety of distros installed at home. Not-a-one is Gentoo, but two are LMDE.
Anyway...
Yeah, check your OEM for Firmware for your DVD drive. That's what I was trying to say in my previous post but it fled my mind.
I'll leave this thread as I have nothing more to contribute...

What you're describing sounds like the copy protection in action. When you say you installed codecs, did you specifically install MPEG2 codecs?General_Norris wrote:Even with VLC.
