Best crafting system in an rpg.

Post by General Chaos »

I would like to get some opinions about this. I've yet to find a more complex and rewarding crafting system than the one in Ultima Online (especially at its height), but I've heard some people mention that the Star Ocean series has a really good crafting system.

Anyone able to shed more light on SO's crafting and/or mention some other games with in-depth crafting?

Dark Cloud 2 had an overly complicated item creation system, that made you use elements in combination with the weapons. You had to use repair powder to keep you weaons in good condition then level them up. You could also invent them by taking photos and submitting them. The created like it so much they kept it for the most part in Rogue Galaxy plus you had a frog, yes a frog, that you could "breed" your weapons and items together. They also added a factory that you could make items in...way too much. Basically it was annoying.

i honestly don't enjoy really in depth crafting systems. They take too much time...and then you can just find or buy a better weapon atfter a little while so it feels like you are wasting time.

Hmm. I had forgotten about Dark Cloud 2. I never got into it too much but the frog thing sounds... interesting.

The one in Star Ocean 2 isn't very involving. The only thing to watch out for is the character's skill when doing it. There are plenty of games that have item synthesis systems (Dragon Quest VII springs readily to mind) but they're not "in-depth," meaning you either toss a few things together and it makes something else or you use your skills to transform one thing into something else.
I have a ton of games listed at my store's site: Super Smash Video Games

Still, the first Dark Cloud's weapon upgrade system was kinda nifty in my opinion. Star Ocean's item crafting was good(I'd say the best of the series was Star Ocean: Second Story's crafting), and Ultima's...but Ultima is the only game I've ever played where that was a legit way to survive, so...yeah.

I've never played the Star Ocean games but I keep hearing about these "other" skills, like musicianship, etc. It may just be wishful thinking amounting to delusion on my part, but I had hoped it would be at least somewhat like Ultima Online's non-combat skills.

Have I gone completely astray or should I give Star Ocean a shot?

It's not really like Ultima...Star Ocean's a good RPG, but don't expect the same system you had in Ultima at all. The skills really don't have as much play, you don't start playing instruments or anything. Think of it more like how it affects stats, item usage, abilities, so on. It's still worth playing, though.

Vagrant Story has a complex equipment creation system which is quite out of place because there's no good way around it.
