Just been playing the JPN version of Varth on MAME. While it may have checkpoints, it does have another quirk that the other versions don't have. I died on Stage 6 and a message came up saying:

Area 80% line crossed, Go to next level.

...and my next life started at level 7! I guess it only happens on certain stages, so I doubt you'd be able to skip any bosses by doing that.

If a score-"board" is what you want, here you go. It's easy to do when there's 2 days of scoring and twice as many days discussing autofire or not I've been playing, but that score I got from Stage 10 is really impressive. The Stage 7 boss gives me the fits!
