Just started yesterday and I'm surprised how much I like it. My only other exposure the SRPGs has been Final Fantasy Tactics, and a little bit of Fire Emblem Awakening.

I wish I had the wherewithal in my youth to know that this game existed when I was wasting time with Shaq-fu. The game is nice and dark to begin with and the story isn't as dry as I thought it was. The 2 things that due bug me are the stupid looks on the main character's profile pictures and the constant "pap" noise on every text box.

Other than that I am loving the game. Starting my 2nd weekend morning with it as we speak.

I'm still early in my modded playthrough, and it's amazing how soft Fire Emblem has made me. Sure, Shining Force doesn't have perma death, but letting people die is usually just as bad, due to how quickly you gain levels. The only tanks are defense tanks due to a lack of an evade stat, and it is much harder to manuever to effect due to having agility-based turn order, rather than turn per side. And it probably doesn't help that the majority of my team are casters at the moment (but once I get that level 20 promotion on my clerics, watch out). I'm going to get a lot of mileage out of my non-weapon users, who get really amazing growths in this game, until promotion lets my other members catch up.

I started my run through last night on my nomad before I went to sleep. The gen cart allows me the most playing location options.

I chose hard, though I maybe shouldve done super this run through. Knocked out the first 3 battles and only lost chester once. Jaha is such a tank. One of my favorite characters who typically stays consistently good and relevant throughout the game.

Agree with the Jaha reputation. He is the obvious attacking choice in most of the early battles and it sounds like the difficulty level does not change his stature either for both normal and hard mode.

It seems like most of the battles early on can be won by powerful weapon based characters like Jaha, Chester and your own character. I just used Sara to heal everyone for the most part.

Im still using them to good effect and I am currently working out how to tackle a large sea creature.....

For the most part healers never have a strong attack. The monk class deviates from that. These guys will be your baseline damage dealers and such for quite some time.

Slade and Kiwi are mediocre at best until promotion. May is that glass cannon along with Kazin who can do some area of effect damage. Peter is the next powerhouse who is this games closest to a god character.

It will be fun to start talking favorite characters as we get further into it.

The thing I hate most about peter. is that he is a kill stealing bastard!
AI controlled guest characters always seem to steal kills and XP, especially if I have a plan for another character

As far as Kiwi, I'd say hes mediocre at best even after promotion, but slade is a powerhouse especially if he gets his best possible weapon.

There are also a lot of interesting stat facts I have learned from others who watched my LP, like promoting chester with the secret item actually lowers his stats.

So yeah once everyone is a little farther in it will be interesting to hear what everyone is doing as far as team strategy.

Peter and May were probably my favorite characters simply because of their reliability. I used Kiwi as a tank for half of the game because he could take hits like a boss and only required a single heal to be back at max HP. God help him if a mage finds him, though. After promotion, I kept him in my party waiting for him to get good, and never got anything from him: Too many enemies, and not enough def at that point to make him a better tank than say Peter, or even Bowy, and his standard attack is miserably weak. He has flashes of brilliance when he uses the fire-breath attack, but it's too inconsistent.

Speaking of promotion items, I only ever found one. Those things are pretty well hidden.

There's one in a chest, one in a bookcase, and three in the scenery. And one of the ones in the scenery are in a place you would never think to look.
