^Agreed that it is a fun little game, and I too love the music, although I think I prefer this one to yours:

I have no ceiling to what I'll pay if the game is worth it in my eyes. I've dropped over $1k on a single game before. Most recently, I dropped $900 on SegaSonic Arcade a few years ago.

Why pay a ton for a rare shoot-em up when there are so many great affordable shoot-em ups out there? And a few of the more rare ones have even been re-released for much cheaper via online networks or collections.

No, we are both correct. You can't have a real answer to this question, because there is no right or wrong answer.
I'm just asking if a game is worth the value of the price now. I'm not saying a game like earthbound or maybe panzer dragoon saga is good or bad games. I don't like rpgs either and I know those two games i.mentioned are great games but are the games really that good or great to be worth 250.00?
You are reinforcing my argument. It's a opinion.

well, if you're just interested in playing something like Ikaruga or Radiant Silvergun, then yeah I agree - get the XBLA port for much cheaper. But I can see the appeal of collecting legit games if you're a collector. Some folks not only want to play those games, but also enjoy the thrill of the hunt and the rewarding feeling of seeing them on their shelf. Eh, I spent $53 on Shienryu this morning. But I also care a great deal about the collecting aspect alongside the fact that I just really love that game. Of course then we get into the whole collector vs. gamer thing which we've done ad naseum 'round these parts so it's just whatever. (Even worse if we get into a collecting vs. emulation debate  ) But I guess I'm just saying it's not as simple as "I'll just find a cheaper shmup" when you're really into the genre, and you're big on collecting as well. And while I will agree there's plenty of cheap shmups to found out there, there's also a plethora of amazing ones that were never brought stateside and as such are going to command a higher price. It is what it is.

EDIT: So tl;dr is yeah, there's lots of expensive games that are worth it to me but maybe not someone else. And vice versa.

Well, practically every shmup I've played plays differently. So what if the game costs $100+? Or less than $20? I'll just pay whatever it costs to play it.

Yep, and that's cool. Although, different ports perform differently so you have to weigh your options. It might be preferable to play the more expensive physical version if the digital is messed up; or vice-versa.

On the NES, they are rarely worth the high cost of entry. Usually the games are not as good as others in the series or are not as good as games in the same genre. Ducktales 2 is not as good as Ducktales 1, and is not worth $150 it goes for - it is worth the $40 the Famicom version goes for though. Snow Bros on the other hand is a different take on the Bubble Bobble style, and while I enjoy the game alot, it is not worth $300* for the difference in gameplay.

The only NES game worth a $100ish price tag in my opinion is Little Samson/Seirei Densetsu LICKLE - but that frequently goes for $500+. It is an excellent platformer, but that is insanity.

Edit:
* It looks like Snow Bros has gone down to the $150 range again recently.

^I would say Restaurant Panic is worth the amount that it's going for now. That's about it though for expensive NES games though. I can't wait for them to go back down in price.
