Do you think retro will one day be enough for your tastes?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I think i've always been satisfied by reto games. Even when new systems come out I'm still two or three generations behind. I think I could be entertained by the 16 bit era for the next 5 years alone. Especailly if people keep coming out with new releases like Pier Solar.

I never buy a "new" system until it's about to be discontinued. The systems are much cheaper and you can make sure you are buying a good model (especailly true these days). You can make sure it's got a a good library and buy used games at a decent price, before they actually become collectors items!!! I'm happy to wait it out and catch up on the last 30 years of gaming before I venture into the future.

I generally prefer most older games to new stuff, they're usually just a slightly different sort of game. But there's one main reason I pretty much always stay at least a generation behind, money. I live 5 years in the ast game wise and not only do I pay way less for my consoles, i rarely pay more than $20 for games and never end up buying a crappy game. It's pretty much a no lose situation.

You're a PS1 fan too? Lovely to know.

I've got about 210 titles for it now, it's the only thing I collect for.

I think it'll never get old. I have about 50 games to finish here and a lot of games on my list that I want to purchase. When I finished all that, there are still retro consoles I do not own, and when I finished them, the current gen will be retro and everything will start again. So there is enough to do for a lifetime, unless of course, your interest changes towards something else. But things like that are hard to predict.

Very interesting topic -

Just last night I was trying to work out if I could get rid of ay of my current gen consoles...

For me it's not about the Retro - it's about the Game. For example - I recently got Sonic for the Master System (on Wii VC). I'm loving it - not because it's 8-bit - but because it's an excellent Sonic game, a better game even (IMO) than the excellent Sonic Rush on DS. Similarly, Rez and Ikaruga, two supurb games that are now considered retro. BUT - I don't like them because they are retro, but because they are excellent games - for this reason I play them in HD on my xbox 360 - the improved graphics IMO make these great games even greater.

What irritates me about current generation games is that I find myself tempeted to play games that are not worth my time - games that I would not play if they were old and could be got for next to nothing, but that bneacuse of magazine and industry hype and marketing, I feel I should play to be in touch with the way games are at the moment, after all, even Retro games were new at one time and, like an earlier poster mentioned, it can be quite special to feel as if you're playing an epochal game such as Radiant Silvergun, not just because it is great, but also because it is groundbreaking. And to discover such a groundbreaking game on release... is fun.

So I end up playig tripe like Bioshock, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Resistance and Legend of Zelda in the hope of re-creating the excitement of playing System Shock 2, Ninja Gaiden, KOTOR and other classics that I played on release. It's all down to discipline and judgement, discipline not to play games that are not worth the time investment (let alone cash expense) and judgement to identify what new releases should be experience.

That said, I'm totally sold on Mirror's Edge for PS3 or Xbox on release... Can't wait till November! :D

I also find myself playing games, (on my ps3) that i wouldnt normally pick up. It's like im looking for a great game and i usually only end up with an "average" type game. I have 5 ps3 games and only 1 truly impresses me. Unchartered is awesome. I'll keep that game forever.

I haven't bought a console since the Dreamcast. After the DC's comercial death I just played games on the PC but, with the exception of a small few, all of these where bought when they hit the $10-$30 budget price range. I simply can't justify spending $80+ on a new game anymore. The only game in the near future I'll be paying release price for is Ghostbusters: The Video Game and that's because I'm a HUGE GB fan. :D

I'm having more fun now playing retro games than I have had playing newer games in the last 9 or so years. Sure, there are some games on my PC I keep going back to, Dues Ex, FarCry, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, the Myst series but that's about all.

Apart from Ghostbusters I can't see myself ever realy getting back into "modern" gameing.

Wait... we're saying the PS1 is retro? Yikes...

I find that the only reason I get new consoles anymore is because they have games that continue the franchises I started liking on older consoles. I only wanted a GameCube because of Metroid Prime, and though I continue to add to my GC game collection from time to time, I think I can count on one hand the number of games on my shelf that aren't part of a franchise I already liked and that aren't based on another franchise, such as The Matrix or X-Men.

Then there's the Wii, which I have resisted buying, but will probably succumb to now that Mega Man 9, Metroid Prime 3, Lego Indiana Jones, Lego Batman, and Super Mario Galaxy are there--all members of franchises I already enjoy.

I really dig 2-D platformers, FPS games, and RPGs, but they hardly make 2-D platformers anymore for anything that isn't portable, I generally hate aiming with a controller and prefer to play my FPS games on a PC. My interest in RPGs has waned over the years, leaving me to be largely satisfied with the ones I already own, and only when I really need my fix do I go out and get a new one.

The lag time between the release of a new console and me getting is becoming greater with each generation. I continue to buy PC games at the same rate as always, though, because I don't need to invest lots of money and shelf space on a new console to be able to play these new games (except for the most outrageously resource-intensive games), and because I know I won't need to get adjusted to the latest controller fad.

I'll keep buying games for as long as anything interests me, but right now, I have enough consoles. I really don't want any more. But the fact that I'm still devoted to a few franchises that are still going means that I'll end up buying new consoles anyhow, and I'll have to buy other games for the system to justify the purchase.

Sad, right?

Flak Beard wrote:That wasn't a bad idea waiting to get an Xbox and Gamecube just last year. I was at a Gamestop yesterday, and saw tons of original Xbox games in the $2 to $3 price range. Games that I bought for $50 when they came out!

Not to mention, my local Target had brand new Gamecube systems for $30. I bought mine when they were $200.

Maybe I should start waiting until the next iteration of something comes around before buying a console. :?

thats one of the best reasons to retro game. unless it is some crazy rare game it wont hurt your pocket. i tend to stay away from new gen stuff. not only are the consoles crazy expensive, the games are too. like several people have mentioned i have only picked up the gamecube and xbox in the last year and for the most part games are dirt cheap. i don't think i have paid over $10 for any xbox game.
