Maybe the Sonata Arctica brand of it, but I see plenty of love for Manowar, Jag Panzer, etc.

Oh, and Manilla Road. People love them some Manilla Road. They're even on this year's Maryland Death Fest!

I'll admit that I like some Iced Earth, ever since I first heard them back in high school.

Power metal, in general, just isn't my thing though.

Been listening to classic Dimmu Borgir this afternoon:

Didn't know they were on Death Fest!

I see what your saying though. I'm a fan of the "American" power metal style, heavier with more thrash influence. I like some of the Blind Guardian style stuff, somewhere between "American" and "European" styles.

Demons and Wizards is an incredible band that's similar to Iced Earth, but they've only released 2 albums.

Ever listen to Blind Guardian? They're similar to Iced Earth, but a little more "folk metal", especially in their earlier stuff. Demons & Wizards is actually made up of members of both bands. Here's one of my favorite by them:

Demons & Wizards - Love's Tragedy Asunder

There is good Power Metal out there. It's doesn't all sound like a renaissance faire.

You have an interesting point about the America versus Europe thing. My favorite power metal bands are American like Kamelot and Iced Earth. I also enjoy some of Jag Panzer's stuff. I find a lot of Euro power metal bands rather cheesy. What I do love from Europe is some of the melodeath bands, and some of the symphonic stuff. I do occasionally find myself enjoying some Euro folk metal too like Eluveitie or Leaves' Eyes Meredead. Then you have the oddball band like Agalloch or Kvelertak, which kind of defy description, but I love them both

People always say if you like Iced Earth, try Blind Guardian. I've never gotten much into them though, even the Demons and Wizards stuff. Since GB is a Euro band, it seems to support that American power metal versus Euro power metal thing

I actually prefer Hansi's work with Ayreon more. The way Ayreon makes use of various well known metal vocalists in 01011001 is amazing

Gamerforlife, I'd just like to point out that "American" and "Euro" power metal talk about the style rather than the actual country of origin. Kamelot fits in Euro style, while Manowar is American. American is more macho, manly, and barbaric, whereas Euro is more idealistic, uplifting, and high fantasy in comparison.

That's probably the best comparison. American Power metal is Conan, Euro power metal is Lord of the Rings.

Interesting, I didn't know that. When you put it that way, I suppose I like the Euro style that Kamelot does. I'm not entirely sure which one Iced Earth falls under. If it's Euro too, then I guess that's my thing.

But then again, I didn't like Blind Guardian's Lord of the Rings concept album, and I did like the two Manowar songs I heard on Brutal Legend. *Shrug*

I guess I have random tastes. Or maybe my tastes are just more defined by specific bands and their individual styles than they are by genres.
