Flea markets around here tend to have cheap anime VHS tapes, which is why I'm considering a nice VCR.Jmustang1968 wrote:I am somewhat surprised so many still have and use VCRs. I don't think I have had a VHS tape or VCR in years. I would have trouble going back.

Who here, without the aid of a search engine, knows what VHS and VCR are acronyms for?

I knew VCR, but had to Google search VHSLuke wrote:Who here, without the aid of a search engine, knows what VHS and VCR are acronyms for?

I mean, we're on a retro gaming forum. Is it really surprising that we do other retro things besides gaming? Maybe half of us have a CRT in addition to an HDTV for the purpose of retro gaming. I don't think it's such a shocker to have a VCR hooked up to that CRT, especially if you still have your dozens or even hundreds of VHS tapes.Jmustang1968 wrote:I am somewhat surprised so many still have and use VCRs. I watched a VHS movie on my HDTV recently, and it wasn't bad at all. Don't get me wrong, blurry as hell compared to a BD or even a DVD, but still very watchable. Not nearly as bad as I thought it was gonna be. I wanted to watch the first X-Files movie because I've been watching the series on NetFlix. NetFlix didn't have the movie on streaming, and I didn't wanna wait for the DVD in the mail, but I've owned it on VHS since it came out. I just had to deal with pan and scan (which is much better than dealing with letterbox on a widescreen IMO) but no big deal.

Haha a bit defensive over your VHS. I was just surprised.Ziggy587 wrote:I mean, we're on a retro gaming forum. Is it really surprising that we do other retro things besides gaming? I would say retro gaming and retro video formats are 2 different beasts. I can still enjoy retro games. I cannot really enjoy VHS any more. The same movie in an inferior format. Its not like DVDs are expensive any more.
But I won't knock anyone who wants to enjoy their tape collection, I was just surprised.

I think it has been atleast 7 or 8 years since I have used any of those. Floppies being the last. I haven't had a floppy drive on my PC in that long. It has probably been 10 years or more for a cassette or vhs.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I still use cassettes, VHS tapes, and floppy disks.

Re: Looking for a VCR/DVD player - tips?
I converted all my VHS cassettes to DVD, listen to tapes once in a while, but haven't used a floppy since I used one as a joke.
Re: Looking for a VCR/DVD player - tips?
I'm thinking about buying some MiniDiscs and a player for nostalgia.
I haven't had a VHS tape since Katrina and keep all my media in digital format (aside from games). That sort of thing seems kind of taboo on these sorts of forums...
EDIT:
I've used floppies more recently to boot and repair old servers, but still haven't used one in quite a while.

Nope. I was just chatting.Jmustang1968 wrote:Haha a bit defensive over your VHS.
But that's like saying why play SMB3 on the NES when you can play it on the SNES. Same game, inferior graphics.Jmustang1968 wrote:I would say retro gaming and retro video formats are 2 different beasts. I can still enjoy retro games. I cannot really enjoy VHS any more. Don't get me wrong, 99.9% of the time I watch a movie it's on DVD or BD. Maybe even a tad more than that.
