Kizuna Encounter is good team-versus action.

I hear good things about Ninja Masters and it looks great in vids, but I don't have it personally yet.

Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer and Rage of the Dragons are also excellent.

Waku Waku 7 appears wacky but has a technically sound engine.

Fight Fever I recall being really good as well, but i've not played that one in some time.
I dont have a problem picking up one of the more well known series, I just wanted to know what one was the most favorable, like if I get a king of fighters, should I try to get the latest one, or was there one earlier in the series that was better than another? I will have to get mark of the wolves sometime, but in the meantime I would like to pick up something more in the under $100 range...well under $100 lol.

This. I'm still looking for a copy myself, but Waku Waku 7 is hands down my favorite fighter on the MVS. It's weird, but way too much fun.

Double Dragon is decent as well.
Ninja Masters is a good one, very solid.

Stand outs to me as far as the popular series:

Real Bout: Fatal Fury Special is a good one, and relatively cheap.

KOF '98 has always been one of my favorites. This was the last entry in the series before they started adding all the extra strikers and other crap.

Breakers is criminally underrated.
Admittedly I don't have it in my cab often, but every time I play it I ask myself why I don't play it more. It's a lot of fun.
There's a sequel called "Breakers Revenge" but I haven't played that one yet...

KoF 2002 is supposedly awesome, but I haven't bought that yet, either.

Agreed, Breakers (both of 'em) are extremely good, super smooth gameplay.

On the flipside, I like World Heroes from a nostalgia perspective, but aren't the first couple entries very dated and clunky - I feel like they didn't hold up well at all.

It's def awesome, make no mistake. With 02, Eolith made an entiry that was worthy of the KoF brand, while at the same time surpassing KOF 98 as the premeire fighter in the long running series among the community.

Yeah, Jet 2 and Perfect are on the level, but the 1st 2 are a little painful to play I must admit. I've always liked the WH series.

Hmm. Now I've gotta play 2002 and see if it stands up. I haven't tried it yet, so the fact that people hail it as better than '98 has me intrigued.

I saw that listing but I'm almost positive that is some kind of crazy conversion cab

no offense but that thing is hideous and its not even an official neo cab.
