No portable version unfortunately. This is gonna make it tough for me to play. :?

I have the original Genesis cart and the Sonic Xbox 360 collection. Think I'm gonna go with the 360 version as it has save states.

I'll start once I finish Gurumin.

Just curious: Is this game a direct sequel to Shining Force 1? Will I be missing anything having not playing the first?
If I recall, it is a direct sequel and some characters make appearances.

The story was very basic. Lots of good dudes defeated an evil dude that was summoning forth an evil presence to destroy the land. The end.

Nope that is the Sega CD/ Game Gear games.

SF2 has a few references from the first, but other than that and gameplay familiarity, there isn't much of a correlation.

In fact, the english translation of the bad guys in the game is at first misleading and confusing for those who playrd the first.

I really implore those who are on the fence about playing this to try this out. While the gameplay and story are still simplistic relatively, it is much more involved and polished than the first game.

As I said before, I have mixed thoughts about this being the selected game. I have beaten this game so many times and I love it, but I was kind of hoping this activity would help me knock out some of my backlog.

On the other hand, this game is what got me into RPGs, so it holds a special place for me. I am excited to share in the experience for others playing for the first time.
A little story: I was in 6th grade and it was in 1994 and remember going to the rental store to get a game for the weekend. For some reason I had an idea for a game in my head where I had a group of guys in a fantasy setting that I could level up. Up to this point I mostly just played sports/action/brawler games. I was aware of D&D and I played Baseball Stars on the NES where you power up your players. I had played some light rpg mechanic fantasy games as well, but never an all out rpg before. So I found Shining Force 2 on the shelf and remember thinking 'wow, this is exactly what I am looking for!'

So I take it home and am enthralled. It really was exactly what I had in mind that I wanted to play. At one part I got stuck. While in class Monday, there was this quiet kid who was always sketching anime and fantasy stuff. So I thought maybe he knew about the game and could help me figure out what to do. Sure enough, he loved the game too and had actually gone to the rental store to rent it again that weekend but it was already checked out! Lol. He ended up becoming one of my best friends throughout middle and high school and introduced me to Final Fantasy VI, Ogre Battle, and Magic the Gathering soon after.

I still remember this all vividly and recognize how fun it can be to experience these single player games along with others. :D

Played the first battle and on my way to complete the first quest. I am playing it on a Genesis cart.

Seems ok, so far. HowLongToBeat.com says it should be about 30 hours: sound right to you, John?

Yep, sounds about right. I used to rent it and beat it over a 3 day weekend back when I was a kid lol.

You mostly enjoyed the first one right?

Bah, how do I not have Shining Force 2? I thought I had all three for the Genesis. How expensive is this?

You can find it for a bit under $30.

Also on the PS3/Xbox 360 Genesis compilations.
