A used system in good shape should go for less than half of that. You were definitely right in waiting.

They're a whole lot of fun and you should definitely enjoy it. I play mine more than my PSP or DS.

I got lucky on mine. A local store near me had CIB ones bundled with Sonic Pocket Adventure and Pac-Man for $40.

They had 3; two were the same color, so I chose the odd one which ended up being Stone Blue.

It is a great little system that defintely was overlooked, but that's also the fault of SNK USA totally botching it's release.

More talk on conversions. "Legit" conversions use all original MVS and AES parts (boards, roms, shells) and are not always popular, in fact, they are quite divisive, because to make a legit AES conversion requires sacrificing both an original MVS cart and also a "donor" AES cart. Non-legit conversions use a legit donor AES cart (almost always), original AES boards (almost always), and flashed 3rd party eproms (always), which makes them not fully SNK parts and typically are prone to error and just aren't nearly as sought after as legit conversions for obvious reasons.

Conversions or boots should of course be marketed as conversion or boot when being sold. This is a major problem on high-end AES games as often they are not, and the artwork and reprint manuals are so good, it is hard to spot fakes.

Legit conversions can be broken down into 3 categories:

MVS games that were not released on AES - (to me, those are collectible and wanted conversions for an AES collector).

Games in this group include:
Bang Bead
Captain Tomaday
Breakers Revenge
Bust a Move Again
Flip Shot
Ganryu
Money Idol Exchanger
Neo Mr. Do
Nightmare in the Dark
Pochi and Nyaa
Pleasure Goal Soccer
Super Dodge Ball
Zupapa

Cheap MVS games (>$75) that were released on AES, but in limited numbers on AES (I personally don't understand the collector factor here, for me, i'd either want the expensive AES legitimate game, or the cheap MVS game)

Games that fit this bill (relatively cheap MVS, very expensive AES, sought after conversions in the $200-250 range):
Aerofighters 3
Kizuna Encounter STB
Blazing Star
Breakers
Magical Drop 3
Ninja Masters
Shock Troopers 2nd Squad
Waku Waku 7

A 3rd category is pricey MVS games that are also very pricey on AES, however a conversion can be had for just slightly more than the MVS game: (this is something I do like personally, for maybe an additional $50 I can have the CIB AES version of the MVS cart)

Games in this category include:
Pulstar
Samurai Showdown V Special
Twinkle Star Sprites

At last! Match Play Shooting! :D

I LOVE TSS. So much fun.

Another conversion worth picking up (MVS game that wasn't released on AES) would be Zed Blade

So if I could only get one fighting game for my MVS what would you guys suggest? I assume Mark of the Wolves will be a popular choice, but that title can be a little pricey. I have no desire to get a bunch of games in each series (KOF, Fatal Fury, SS, ETC...) And would like to have a good idea of what to keep an eye out for. I want to (hopefully) get games slowly, and enjoy all of them, so I only want to get some of the best stuff.

@ jay_red - "non-traditional" (no KoF/Garou/Fatal Fury)

Kizuna Encounter is good team-versus action.

I hear good things about Ninja Masters and it looks great in vids, but I don't have it personally yet.

Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer and Rage of the Dragons are also excellent.

Waku Waku 7 appears wacky but has a technically sound engine.

Fight Fever I recall being really good as well, but i've not played that one in some time.
