What was the last movie you've seen?

There's a rental shop around the corner from me that still has Nintendo 64 games. Pretty crazy if you ask me.

Ah, Star Wars. If not for you, we would never have had that boom of B-movie late 1970s/early 1980s space opera SciFi. And of these, The Black Hole is probably the most notable, since it was Disney's offering, stars the likes of Maximilian Schell and Ernest Borgnine(with voicework by Roddy McDowall and Slim Pickens), garnered two academy award nominations, and served as the stepping stone for Disney's venture into more adult-oriented films.

But how is the film? Well...it's no Star Wars. In fact I spent more time thinking about the design of ships and outer space compared to 2001: A Space Odyssey than Star Wars. But while the ships are impressive, the robots in the film are less impressive. V.I.N.CENT serves as the robot hero, and he looks cutesy despite his philosophical demeanor. But Schell once again manages to thrill with his intensity, something I have always admired about him (even if it sometimes borders on comical, such as his televised version Hamlet). Unfortunately the movie has a very ambiguous ending. Apparently going through a Black Hole will take us to Hell? I can't be sure. And the spinoff books and comics have differing takes on what happens.

I remember watching that as a kid and being kind of in awe, but not remembering much of the story while growing up. I rewatched THE BLACK HOLE about a year ago and it's... interesting. I pretty much agree with everything Ack stated about it.

I thought it was quite ambitious for it's time (that scene w the rolling meteor thing comes to mind) but the score was really repetitive. (dah dah dah DAAAAH dadada... dah dah dah DAAAAH dadada...).

I think it's biggest problem was that it still had the Disney 'cutesy' signature. The look of the film, and especially the smaller robots like V.I.N.CENT and the other one made it look more kid like. I think if it were remade with modern effects and a bit better writing it could be pretty cool.

Crazy theory on POLTERGEIST:

Steve and Diane Freeling get stoned out of their gourds, fall asleep watching television, and share a nightmare. Their nightmare ends as they wake up to turn off the television and go back to sleep, symbolized in the last shot in the movie where they kick the tv out of the motel room.

And I know I'm stretching longer than Armstrong (the toy and the cyclist), but it popped into my mind "Man are they stoners or what? For all I know they could be tripping", and the face-pull-off scene is very acid-like.

I never saw Black Hole as a kid and I found it on demand a couple months ago. It was one of those fast forward on your first time kind of movies for me(Along with Death Proof).

Have you ever watched the theatrical version of Grindhouse? I ask because, taken on its own, Death Proof does seem kind of dull, but if you watch the whole double feature the way it was intended, the whole thing plays better than if you watch either film seperately.

I don't get why so many people rip on Death Proof, I honestly think its equal with Planet Terror, maybe even better.

Its a lot of car scenes and talking, but then again, pretty much every real car movie is. Carsploitation FTW.

My problem with Death Proof is that it focuses WAY too long on the talking. It got so bad, I forgot Kurt Russell was in the movie. That was the moment I felt that Death Proof was the weakest part of the Grindhouse set. When I think of a good car movie, I think of Vanishing Point, Duel, Smoky and the Bandit, or a variety of race movies ranging from Cannonball Run to Death Race 2000. There was just far too long a break in the action for Death Proof to be effective for me.
