Neo Geo MVS restoration.

Post by jay_red »

I finally found the deal I have been looking for on an MVS cab after some time. I checked Craigslist all the time, hoping one would pop up, but when they did, they were either overpriced or too beat up.

The other day on a fluke search, I typed "neo geo" into the general search bar on craigslist, and found a cab listed under the "collectables" section for $250 with an issue on the motherboard. I checked it out, and it was in pretty good condition, and I was able to get him down to $200, knowing I might have to replace the board if I could not get the current one working. After 2 days of trying to fix the board, I have to call it dead. Now that I have to wait on getting a board, I have decided to restore the cab, and fix some of the more rough parts of it.

Here it is the first night:

I will be repainting the sides, and getting replacement decals.

This wear seems to be very common on these control panels:

There is the board, even though the cab is a 4 slot, the board had been replaced with a 2:

If only it was a 4 slot, and had these games :( (well it did come with Metal Slug 5)

I started taking it apart yesterday, and laying down some paint on a couple different parts.

The control panel, and coin doors baking in the sun after painting them:

Took all the buttons out and cleaned them (they were pretty bad) I will keep these for now, but plan on putting sanwa into it later:

Back covers off, it was pretty clean inside overall, just dusty.

Here is how she sits right now, I got a bit of work to get done today, and I am super excited to do it!

I have found my favorite spray paint ever! I was reading up another neo geo restoration, and he mentioned using Rustoleum Hammered paint, and I grabbed a can and it rocks!

I had to repaint the control panel after finding this paint, and I am glad I did.

It goes on evenly, and naturally creates a texture, not only does it feel durable, it hides any imperfections on the surface.

Image

I also filled in the huge holes near the coin door, where there was a big lock/guard to protect against vandalism I assume. I will be getting out my palm sander soon to get the cab ready for paint.

Been watching every ebay auction for MVS boards all weekend, an MV1B came up for $75 OBO, so I offer $60 and he counters with $65 and I take it. Then I just grabbed the Jamma to MVS adapter needed for multi cart cabs, spent right about $100. Hopefully I get them soon!

Thanks! I have been on the lookout for an MVS for at least a year, and was glad to finally find one locally. i started sanding down for paint today, and did some minor wood repairs on chips and a couple gouges.

Started to sand down the cab for paint, and realized that it is actually covered in vinyl. I thought about just sanding it rough and painting it, but then thought that since I really want a good result, I need to go all out in prep. I got out the heat gun, tweezers, and a scraper and went to town.

It took me an hour to do one side (just the red part). the vinyl came off a couple of inches at a time, so I had to heat it up a little it, get an edge, peel, tear, repeat. I think the other side will go faster, as I got some technique down now. In a more positive note, the black vinyl (the bottom half of the cab) comes off as if you are just tearing paper out of a note book! Just grab an edge and it comes right off. I was able to do all the black on the side in about 2 minutes haha. My goal is to get some paint on tonight, still have to pull the other side red, and the front coin door area.

Here she is, all naked  Dont worry, once I get her painted, she will have the iconic Neo Geo decals again.

In other news, my new board should be here by thursday!

Woo! Sexy!

I'm sure you've probably got your decal situation sorted, but in case you don't there's this guys site: http://www.thesupergun.com/tools/neo-ge ... rt-decals/

he even does the memory card stickers and paint masks if you wanted to just paint the logos on there.

good stuff, jay. i'm happy to see this cab went to a good home.

So taking the vinyl off the first side was tedious, but not terrible, something about the second side is just not working. I spend the rest of the night trying to take off the other side, and it was a slow process. It might have something to do with my fingers hurting so bad from the other side that I couldnt really get a grip, but I was only able to get about 50% off. While doing that I started painting the other side, the color looks good, the only thing I am a little concerned about is the texture of the wood is very porous, so the side is a rough texture (which I dont mind so much) I just hope after some more coats it builds up a bit to make the effect less pronounced.

Edit:
Major progress today! Got all the vinyl off! Near the end my cheapo Harbor Freight heat gun crapped out on me, so I had to run to the store for another, it lasted me 3 years so I wasnt too upset about it haha.

I took my time and sanded the crap out of this side, and the painted result is much better than the other side, so much so, that I am going to sand down the other side and repaint it, hope my remaining paint can do it all!

Here is the good side, this is 2 coats of paint, and I will be doing more tomorrow.

Seeing this side look so good has me excited to finish it up! After I get it painted, all I need to get is some new t-molding, and redo the monitor bezel and I think shes gonna be good to go!
