I mention it because I recently watched Bastard. It's a great anime, otherwise.
The level of taboo in Japan for incest seems to be much lower than it is in the west. The plot of Fire Emblem 4 involves a LOT of incest to revive the dark god.

Started watching Darker than Black. I actually kinda like the dub job. Don't like what I've read about the series not bothering to actually explain much of the supernatural stuff, though. That started with Evangelion and it's a horrible habit. In Eva it was, I think, meant to make it seem like there was all this depth to the series below the surface, but it was actually more that they just didn't want to be bothered to commit to an explanation.

The Dub of Tenchi Muyo mentions this I think.

It was more like the fanbase wanting there to be more to it than there was or needed to be. Everything of importance was explained, and really it's quite straightfoward for the most part. Some stuff that could be open to interpretation would be the animation acid trip moments I guess. But even those usually occur for a simple reason, and are just style and nothing more. The famous sequence at the end of EoE for example is really just an event that could have just as easily been portrayed as a one second flash of light.

My response to this is that a lot of the provided "explanations" were worthless or stupid. I have a deep pit of distaste for Eva. So many people love it and talk about how important or deep it was, and it really wasn't. The stuff that wasn't explained fools people into thinking there's more there, and the stuff that was explained was weak-sauce. I wanted to like the series, and I did like some of the music, but none of the characters hooked me and the setting was effectively nonsensical.

Tenchi was a special case because over half the main characters were royalty and royals typically don't give fucks about incest as long as they aren't blood siblings.

I mostly agree with you (aside from it not being important, as it's undeniable that it was a game changing series), yet I consider myself a big NGE fan. I just enjoy it for what it is and realize the writer thought it was hilarious to stir the pot in reaction to the popularity explosion it got. I'm not sure what came off as "weak-sauce" or nonsense to you, so I'm not really sure what else to say. Like I said, I found it to be pretty straightforward. The massive controversy amuses me if anything.

As for it always being called "deep" or whatever, I think that's really been misconstrued through the years. To me the series could be considered "deep" to some extent for dealing with characters that are complex and have a lot of depth to examine, not for having subject matter that is incomprehensible or difficult to understand.

Basically what bruno said. I've never loved NGE, but it's one that sticks, I respect, and can certainly rewatch. For me it's about the execution, the directors style and some of the stuff it brings up is just awesome and very different from the norm. I pretty much flatout hate all the characters, but there's still enough good going for the series that makes me enjoy it.

But yeah, it's kind of like how (not here but elsewhere) when I talk about FFVII or something, it's like I have to raise my defenses to state that I'm a fan of the game, or Zelda, etc, it's the fanbases that have really give this stuff a bad name sometimes. Same with NGE. I don't think there's really anything to interpret at all, but the crazy fans keep trying to dig away at nothing and overblow everything. You'll never see me praising it, or dishing out a lot against it. Just one of those shows you really have to work extra at to form your own judgement and not give a crap what others think.
