Local music thread

Post by J T »

Show your hometown pride and post some of your favorite local artists!

I'm in Seattle, so the local scene here is always popping. My first post goes out to all our local hip hop heads.

One of the great things about Seattle hip hop, is that we do it kinda different here. Where other rappers make their videos by getting a bunch of pimped out cars, gold chains, and half naked girls, we say "nah, let's make our video with pirate ships, a living room on a trailer, and a camel. While other rappers brag about their over-priced bling, we brag about finding a stank-ass coat that only cost 99 cents!.

Other rappers talk up their game and brag about how many girls they've slept with, but we gotta be honest. We're not very good with the ladies.

But you know, those Seattle ladies are cool, so you gotta play it cool, bring yourself, and don't funk with their groove.

We don't like the posteuring. When we "keep it real" it's a little more humble. In this home of Starbucks, Tully's, and Seattle's Best, we write about what we know, and what we know is COFFEE!

But what would you expect from us? When the rest of the rap world was cold faced serious gangstas or gettin real about black awareness, Seattle shouted up from the NW to just say "yo, I like big butts!"

Yeah, we can be more scholarly, but we also know we come from good blue collar stock too. So we have to balance our two sides.

Even though we joke around, don't let that fool you. Seattle is a liberal city and we take our freedom to joke around and be ourselves very seriously. To that end, we can put all jokes aside and get on a political crusade where we don't rest until there is freedom for every last one of us.

And that's what it's all about where I'm from. 8)

Now excuse me while I go out for a walk in my city where we wear our underwear on the outside

Great idea for a thread Toader.

I've been friends with these guys for, yikes, nearly a decade.

First person to point me out in the video gets a CIB copy of Crash Wrath of Cortex, PS2 for freebies.

When you live in Maine you consider the entire state to be "local."

The Year of Our Lord - Decent enough metalcore. Never saw these guys live when I was really into this sort of thing, for some reason.

Falls of Rauros - Fantastic atmospheric black metal.

Cerberus Shoal - An interesting old-school emo type band. I dig it.

Keeping this to currently playing, otherwise it's going to get out of hand.
On the Might of Princes - Old school screamos, but have been doing lots of reunions. Plus, I'm in a band with one of em'.

Iron Chic - Good pop-punk/indie. Akin to SuperChunk and the like. The bass player runs one of the best DIY punk/indie labels on the east coast (dead broke rekerdz) and the singer did the artwork for the last two arcade sticks I made.

Wax Phantom I can't forget about this band. Nearly half of the members if Iron Chic, but also ex members of some of my other favs. They sound like Old school Weezer and... maybe metal at some points? One of the guitarists did a 'solo' metal record called "Serpent and the Rainbow" which feat. many friends on. It was one of my favorite releases of the past year or two.

Deep Pockets Cheeky and quirky indie (kind of like Silkworm) + Good friends!

Go Sell Drugs - I've toured with em' twice and did a split 7". They are awesome hard garage-punk kind of like John Spencer blues explosion meets black flag. The drummer is an amazing engineer and has recorded a few of my bands records.

I could name drop another 100 great local bands, but that's what happens when nearly every person you know is in one.

Awesome band! I have the re-issue of Where You Are and Where You Want to Be (with the white slipcase). I listen to it constantly, such a good record.

Awesome! My friend Mike from Rok Lok Records put that out. He actually used to post here about 3 years ago.

In Seattle, it rains. Always. As you can see in this video by local band Cataldo

That chill rain seeps into your bones, which is how we get such heart-breaky beautiful folk music like that from The Fleet Foxes.

But don't think that Washington doesn't have soul. Just look inside Allen Stone's mother's living room for evidence.

Been friends with these guys for awhile, played a handful of shows with them and it's always a blast. They're not really "local" but when you live in the section of Wisconsin I do, you consider everything but Madison/Milwaukee local.

Unfortunately, I can't really find their stuff up anywhere but MySpace, and it's pretty old.
