I'd like to add to this list if it hasn't already been mentioned.

Fatal Fury Battle Archives is a quality compilation of the first trilogy including Fatal Fury Special.

Fatal Fury Battle Archives Volume 2 is where this starts getting really good. This features the Real Bout trilogy on one disc. I had so much fun mastering the "oversway" system to dodge and attack from alternate lanes. I spent many nights brawling with my roommates in Real Bout Special.

^Are these changed ports, or arcade perfect? If the former, where else can you find them?

I'm also adding Gun.Smoke and Dragon Spirit. Both of these are stripped down shooters, but they have a charm about them that makes them nice. They're also considerably easier, but still very fun to play. I think I actually had more fun with Gun.Smoke on the NES than I did on CCC1.

Most of the SNK collections are direct ports IIRC.

These really don't count then. I would be interested in knowing which should be avoided, though.

Is that slowdown also apparent in the original versions?

I believe at least in the case of Shock Troopers it wasn't. Though I didn't notice it enough to bother me, or I was on crack while playing. :P

Gonna throw some big questions here. What about:

Pac-Man
Frogger
Street Fighter II (and the rest)
Mortal Kombat/II/III
Marble Madness
Paperboy
Robotron: 2084
Smash TV
The Tower of Druaga
Dig Dug
Pole Position
Pole Position II
Mappy
Centipede

Robotron is pretty good on the SNES. Obviously the D-pad and the 4 buttons isn't as good as 2 sticks, but the port itself is satisfying and it would be easy enough to hack together a proper setup.

But was it ever remade for the SNES? I thought we just got it on the compilation, which would count as an arcade compilation (or does it? I haven't played). It was made for the 5200, 7800, C64, and Apple II, though, so are any of those better than the Williams cart for the SNES?
