Changing the layout of the buttons still seems like a preference to me, and I can perform in Mega Man 3 with just two buttons with no issue. I would be interested to see this example implemented into a shmup, since that is what we are talking about.
And yes, in some games auto fire can be replicated manually. In some other games, it cannot. Play any Toaplan shooter without auto fire and then with auto fire and tell me thats an even play field. Even with 2 finger alternating taps, you cannot match auto fire. Recreating what is happeneing with auto fire is nearly impossible. So yes, if your controller method is allowing you to do something that is nearly impossible on a normal keyboard, stick, or pad, then you are creating an uneven play field.
I would be very interested to see what you could come up with as to how this could work in a shmup though. It seems odd that a controller could provide an unfair advantage, yet 3 of the best Ketsui players in the west have achieved a Ura 2-ALL, one using a stick, one using a basic keyboard, and one using a stock 360 controller's d-pad, even though there is no restriction on controller layouts.
There are no seperate scoreboards for controller type, in any shmup, yet, for example, in Gun Frontier, there are two World Records, one with auto fire and one without. Even at top skill, their scores are not comparable. And the port of this game even includes auto fire.

So what have we decided? No auto-fire? 2 separate score tables?
I just wanna know what the deal is, so I know how to post my scores.

Just start a Zed Blade thread and we'll do that.foxhound1022 wrote:So what have we decided? No auto-fire? 2 separate score tables?

Geez you guys, when I see 3 pages spring up overnight on this thread, I thought it was more scores from Tyranix and DH. Instead, it's just a brou-ha-ha about autofire.
MAME 0.141 does not have autofire for this game, and I'm playing the World ROM. The rate of fire for this game reminds me of the port of UN Squardon on the SNES, also by Capcom, where you can hold the button for about 1-2 seconds and get a good stream off, then you need to let go before it stops firing for good, to keep it going. Like when I use the laser, I always fire the length I believe is required to destroy something, and keep it down for a full effect on bosses.
All this about separate tables and stuff, that's entirely up to you, but with the regular rate of fire I'm experiencing in the game, I don't think auto fire is gonna make or break a run here. I'd be more concerned if it was a game where you had to constantly mash away to make rapid fire. ExedExes is a great example of that, the game, not me! We played Dragon Spirit and that didn't have auto fire either.

I think that separate tables should be used for versions with/without auto fire. If people are playing versions which respawn at a checkpoint, that should be noted too (so 4 tables, potentially)dsheinem wrote:are people using autofire or not? seems an important thing to know...
Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2013 (Varth)
This is all well and good for people who are playing on arcade cabinets or who own arcade sticks - left hand for the stick and your right hand is completely free, so button-mashing isn't a problem.dsheinem wrote: The reason it is unfair/cheating is because the physical action of hitting buttons quickly, perfecting timing, etc. is part of what it means to be good at a game designed not to have auto-fire. So you might be creating an "even playing field" in one sense, but you are disadvantaging those players who can meet the physical and mental demands of the game and who would thus be scoring higher than those who can only do the latter.
If you're playing with a pad that requires two-hands to hold it, or playing on a PSP, well...have you tried button-mashing on a PSP?
(Varth is available on the PSP, I own it. You can also play it in TATE mode on your PSP! This...is also kinda awkward.)

Also, Captain Tomaday is friggin' weird. Definitely outside of the box on that one.

I view Auto-Fire as Cheating--unless it's in the Settings (like Progear/Strikers 1945+).
Then you can enable it, and use it--if you like.
IMHO, games gets much easier with Auto-Fire enabled.

Ok, "cheating" is a bit strong I guess. I still think separate tables for the type of port (autofire or no, auto respawn or no) makes sense.DocHauser wrote: If you're playing with a pad that requires two-hands to hold it, or playing on a PSP, well...have you tried button-mashing on a PSP?It just isn't practical. Therefore, it's a bit much to call those people 'cheats'.
