Our first game up is a strategy rpg favorite fan favorite with a big following and sequel to last year's TR game - Shining Force 2. This game is a bit shorter than others and should easily be beatable in 2 months.
Next is JRPGs! Get your votes in by Wednesday evening!
Schedule:
May 11th - July 11th -SRPG - Shining Force 2
July 11th - Sep 11th - JRPG - Phantasy Star 2
Sep 11th - Nov 11th - Western RPG - Planescape: Torment
Nov 11th - Jan 11th - Action RPG - Crystalis
**Initial Post**So, after discussing this with Dave in our podcast recording last night, I wanted to gauge interest.
This could be similar to the shmup of the month club. Given the length and nature of RPGs, I was thinking it might be better if it was bi-monthly or quarterly...
Any thoughts? Give input and potential interest. If we get some, we can discuss format, schedule, and potential games.

Re: Together RPG of the month or quarter club?
I think that this is a great idea, and I would try to participate. I agree that one RPG per month would be too much, but if you divided the year up by seasons, then it would be more manageable.

I like this idea. I think bi-monthly would work pretty well.
As far as choosing games, remember the basic Together Retro rule: try to choose games that have multiple ports and/or can be easily emulated.

That may be more difficult with RPGs, but I think it is a very good rule for any sort of video gaming club.Opa Opa wrote:I like this idea. I think bi-monthly would work pretty well.

I also really like the idea of "seasonal" RPGs...you could choose something a little more upbeat for the summer months (e.g., Earthbound.) and something a little more somber for winter (e.g., Final Fantasy VI).

Re: Together RPG of the month or quarter club?
Considering I have about 300 RPGs to complete still in my backlog, I think this is a decent idea. Maybe you could post a list for the entire year beforehand, giving people time to either find the game or the console to play it on? To my knowledge, RPG emulation isn't the greatest...

I'd probably participate on games that are available for handhelds.

Rpg emulation is great. Just depends on the console. They are easy to play on a keyboard compared to action games.

Re: Together RPG of the month or quarter club?
I'd be pretty down for this if we did it on a bi-monthly or seasonal basis. Never had too much of an issue with emulating RPG's before unless they're for an obscure console if it comes down to that. I haven't had many chances in recent years to play through an RPG with another person and discuss it while we made progress in our games, that was always a fun thing to do.

Re: Together RPG of the month or quarter club?
I'd totally be down for this. Mostly because of the time commitment the games take, it would be cool to have people to discuss the games with as we play through them.
I think bi-monthly would work well. Less than an hour of gameplay a day over the course of two months and you could still beat a 50 hour rpg that way.

That is still a lot of time for some of us, and I think that three-month periods would result in a higher participation rate.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:I think bi-monthly would work well. Less than an hour of gameplay a day over the course of two months and you could still beat a 50 hour rpg that way.
That said, if the group wants to go with bi-monthly, I will try to keep up, but I think my participation (and the participation of other member's with constrained schedules) will be limited to shorter games.
