This game is no ExedExes, that's for sure. When I had the opportunity to play it on the real hardware years ago, the first score I posted was the point I always made it up to  But then again, who said I don't bring you all the Capcom shmup goodness? Honestly, even if I play this for the next 30 nights, it's gonna be a long process to get to these 2 scores.

For those having trouble getting the game to run in MAME:

- it's also available on Capcom Classics Vol 2 on PS2/XBox
- & Capcom Classics Reloaded on PSP
- Also, I exclusively use MAME 0.141 unless a specific game does not work at all. This was the final release before they broke the core with the mechanical/pinball ROMS, causing a much longer startup time.

Now, to plan out how to double my score/stage by May 31......

(EDIT: 970K on Stage 6?!?!?!!?!?!?! Whut? HOW?)

No pod and bomb stock bonuses are a pretty hefty amount of points. Not sure if he got the 300k from the stage 4 boss or not.

I think I must have got that Stage 4 boss bonus, because I remember being on 500k or so during the level and it went up to over 800k after the level. I think this has an effect on the your score-extends, though. Which would explain why I didn't seem to get the 2nd extend at 2 million. You'd need ~2.3 million in that case.

I had been picking the machine-gun weapon for that run, but I've been trying out the laser now, which seems very powerful at max level. The only problem was, I killed the Stage 4 boss too quickly and only got 28k instead of the 27k/270k bonus...

I think my previous best in Varth was getting to Stage 8 or 9, so I was quite pleased to hit the Stage 10 milestone so soon into the month. However, I wasn't expecting to get this far so quickly:

DocHauser - 2,731,600 - S15 - Smart Pods - Shmupmame 4.2

Halfway through! :) I didn't get the 270k bonus on Stage 4 or the Ryu-extend either, so 3M+ is a definite possibility.

Sorry, kinda blurry. I was all into it until I saw submarines in lava. That is complete BS!

Some really impressive scores posted so far! I'm pretty rusty with this one, but this is at least a start.

How do you guys handle the Stage 7 boss?

Also, what do people think about separate scoreboards for the two ship types?

I'm not sure if it's necessary to have separate tables. Most of the scores in the shmups forum table favour the smart pods, but 3 of the top 5 are using fixed (while one of the others is a no-pod run!). So it seems that it's possible to score just as well with either.

Yeah, their scoring potential seems close, so its definitely not necessary. I just thought it would be cool to keep track of who might be better when dodging is out of the question and the game is all about absorbing, as opposed having slower bullets, but a pod that can't be relied on as much, forcing you to dodge through stuff.

Plus, it seems people keep playing longer when they have more than one list to shoot for. Get tired of Smart, try out Fixed and get rained on for a bit.

If I'm the only one that feels this way though, definitely don't separate them on my account. It was just an idea.

Feeling a bit flustered that I'm not as good with a Capcom shmup as the rest of the world is, I went back to work.

ExedExes - 986,400 - Stage 7 - Fixed - MAME

I knew about Ryu on Stage 4 -- made a note of it on my monthly write up. I really don't like there's a serious scoring bug on the Stage 4 boss, it will make for some rather uneven scores :? There's a no pod bonus too? Except for defense, I really don't see a need for those.

Separating the Smart/Fixed scores might not be a bad idea, but that's probably gonna be just based on each person's preference. It won't make that much of a difference.
