There are some region differences for Varth, so I think people will probably want to stick with the World or US versions.

The Japan version has checkpoints (!), which obviously makes scoring hard to compare with the other versions. I think there's also the possibility of checkpoint-milking in certain levels, particularly Stage 4, which has a potential extra-life item just after a checkpoint. I tried it yesterday and was able to play the same section three times over with no penalty, because I died twice and picked up the extend each time as well.

Here's my first effort on the US version. Should give people a target to aim for.

Damn, you guys are off to a nice start, and I haven't even popped a credit in yet!

As for version, lets stick to the world/us revisions. This game is long enough without checkpoints.

I suppose if someone really wants to play their jp-region board, we could just add a scoreboard. Checkpoint milking ruins games for me though. I don't want to play stages 4-30 on one life because I have to dump all of my lives for score on stage 4!

Mike, do you have any mortal enemies? If so, I think one of them works for mamedev.

What OP are you running?

God, I hate MAME. That's why I'm playing it on CCC2 on PS2.

ShmupMAME 3.0. I tried 4.2 like Doc but it keeps asking me to download other things first to extract files and such :/

I didn't realize it was on PS2 - my fault, I would've grabbed a copy of that by now.

I have the world rom installed now, but same joystick input issues - joytokey works...mostly, but my joystick auto pulls down, not sure why, it didn't do that for Crimzon. If I have time, i'll troubleshoot more this weekend.

Whoops, meant to write what OS are you using, but since its sounding like the stick is the issue, the OS wouldn't matter, and I'm of no use. I can't shmup worth a shit with a stick  If you decide the frustration of the stick isn't worth it and happen to have a wired 360 controller, all you ave to do is hit tab to open options in mame, and set each button. As long as the driver installs when you plug it in, Mame will recognize it immediately. I dunno, its a option.

A few things that may have not been mentioned yet:

Rank increases much, much faster when using fixed pods. Rank increase whether using smart pods, or no pods, seems to be pretty similar.

On Stage 4, there is a hidden ryu that you can shoot out of a tree. He drops items, but let them float on and keep shooting him until he reaches the height of his Shoryuken, which will cause him to drop a 1up.

The Stage 4 boss' value starts at 30k points, but drops the longer you fight him. However, there is bug in the game, so if you kill him when the score hits either 29k (A very fast kill), or 27k, you will instead earn 290k or 270k points, respectively.

I knew I saw Ryu do a Shoryuken on Stage 4!! I just thought I was freaking out, or they added it to the CCC version.
