They then spent like 8 years talking about how they're working on another one.

EDIT: oh, looks like they finally got that second album out after all.

I remember hearing them when they were making buzz several years back, but didn't really care much for what I heard.

Well guys, I've hit a wall.

I'm just having a bit of trouble finding stuff I'm liking right now. I'm loving the stoner/retro/sludgy stuff, but then again, I've run into the problem of too many bands sounding samey and a lot of others that are just crap. (Especially in Stoner metal, a large amount focus way to much on riff repetition than anything elsle.) Same general problem with thrash, especially looking at new stuff.

I've found few traditional metal bands I like, and power isn't something I've delved into yet.

And my browsing of Metal Archives has not made me a fan of the site, just because of general use. I fit in better at Heart of Metal, which is full of old men and guys like me making fun of how theatrical and goofy black metal can be.

Most new thrash bands are basically carbon copies of old thrash bands anyway . Worship bands can be cool sometimes, but you have to kinda know what you're getting into.

Too many people dive head first into digging and discovering too many bands at once. I think it's better sometimes to just stop and take some time to really get to know the stuff you've found that you already like.

If you're insisting on exploring more though, maybe a better avenue would be to just find other bands that members of bands you're already into have been involved in? M-A's database makes searching that way pretty easy. Seriously, sometimes the stuff you find that way can be really surprising and cool.

Not sure what you mean by "general use" there though.

As far as recommendations go, there are some really great "lists" on sites like RateYourMusic that I've always found helpful. Here's a pretty good thrash one my buddy made:

Right off the bat there's Celtic Frost, heh, might as well get the more arguable/controversial entires out of the way!

CF's vitally important to virtually every metal subgenre under the 'extreme' umbrella though, so I can definitely see the argument..

Apple, my problem on Metal Archives is that it seems like every band I really dig, has no "similar bands" listed. Its probably partly me not using it correctly, and forum browsing hasn't gotten me much of anywhere. Those guys are all over the place.

The reason I brought up re-thrash was how I'm trying to find bands who are halfway new and still releasing stuff I can get into. I can sit around and listen to music from the 60-80's all day, but I still want something new once in a while.

Yeah there are certain bands that are hugely influential within a specific genre of music, despite never actually playing that style of music themselves.

Stuff like crust punk wouldn't exist without Motörhead or Killing Joke, yet neither one is a crust band.

It's very hard to pigeonhole Celtic Frost. I just call them "extreme metal."

Those RYM lists are definitely a good place to dig around. I have a buddy who's really into RYM, I'll have to ask him for some good lists.

That list in particular is pretty damn awesome though. I went ahead and looked at that user's Death Metal list and damn. Sooooooooo many great albums there, I think I see a bunch of stuff I need to check out now.

Oh, the "similar bands" system is really new (it didn't exist before the site revamp a couple of years ago) and probably isn't something you should use to browse. I don't think it really works that well because most people don't bother updating or adding to it. I know I've never really used it...

Digging through reviewers on there can sometimes be helpful in discovering new stuff too.

As a general database of bands and information for metal, I don't think MA can be topped.

I get what you mean, but I find digging up some unheard-of contemporaries is probably a better bet if you want bands that sound a little more earnest and aren't necessarily going for a 'retro' vibe. Not that there's necessarily anything 'wrong' with retro bands of course. Don't be afraid to check out old demo bands either, there's some awesome stuff there!

Yeah that dude is pretty prolific - one of my favorite RYM users. Tons of great lists and album reviews - I have no idea where he finds the time to do all that. And the icing on the cake is that he's posted a bunch of great video game related stuff as well.
