What are some rpg/role-playing games you loved, but that were generally not well received?
Right off the bat I can say I enjoyed Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Fun Combat and good graphics.

Well recieved as in didn't get good reviews, or well recieved as in didn't sell much?
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Re: Underrated Rpgs?
I know that when Final Fantasy Anthology came out, reviewers totally trashed Final Fantasy V.
I think it's easily on par with IV and VI, even though it's good for very different reasons.
But can any FF game be considered underrated?
I really liked an RPG for Game Boy Color called "Metal Walker" - it was basically a Pokemon clone but with weird bouncing-based combat. I thought it was fun, even though I didn't beat it! I don't think a lot of people know about it.
Dragon Quest/Warrior Monsters is another game generally regarded as a Pokemon-clone that I think is better than Pokemon. Considering that sequels are still coming out in North America, it might not be TOO underrated?

Oh man! I had this one as a kid. I played through quite a bit of it, but never beat it. I'm going to have to go looking for it now for sure.Nemoide wrote:I really liked an RPG for Game Boy Color called "Metal Walker" - it was basically a Pokemon clone but with weird bouncing-based combat. I absolutely loved this game to death. I played it through a couple of times, and enjoyed it immensely. The breeding was really fun, and All the other kids thought it was just some cheap knock-off though and had no interest in it.Nemoide wrote:Dragon Quest/Warrior Monsters is another game generally regarded as a Pokemon-clone that I think is better than Pokemon. The 7th Saga is one of the best RPGs on the SNES. It's a polarizing game that frequently gets trashed for its "Western" character designs and brutal difficulty.

Was FFV actaully trashed for being a bad game, or was it trashed for the kinda crummy localization/porting? Because FFV is a fantastic game.Nemoide wrote:I know that when Final Fantasy Anthology came out, reviewers totally trashed Final Fantasy V.

I'm gonna throw out Okage: Shadow King on Ps2. Very overlooked early Ps2 game, has some really nice humor and writing in it.

I'm not sure if I'd call it underrated so much as unrecognized, but I maintain that Magic Knight Rayearth is the best RPG on the Saturn, and one of the best Action RPGs ever made.
Re: Underrated Rpgs?
I think Pokemon does a better job with the overall story and world. It takes a simple task of "visit the 8 gyms" and throws a bunch of diversions in the way that gives character to the world. DQM, on the other hand, is pretty much just "do this dungeon, now this one, now this one, don't ask why." That said, the breeding is much better since you get to breed to create better monsters, and you get much more control over passing down moves. Pokemon breeding is really just for competitive battling, since you always get one of the parents, and you only pass down certain moves.jinx wrote:I absolutely loved this game to death. I will defend FFV to the bloody end. Had it received the proper translation it was to originally get, it might have been received better. Playing it through again on the GBA, there is great character interactions, battles, and who can not like the job system? Endless possibilities.

Blue Dragon maybe? Might get some flak for this one though, lol.
I just seemed to enjoy that game so much more than I did Lost Odyssey or Tales of Vesperia for some reason. So I guess that makes it my favorite RPG on the 360 at least.
