As a publisher, SE is doing well in my eyes. As a developer, they should've stopped trying at the start of this gen. The constant EA hate as of lately kind of cracks me up too, I've always thought it was obvious Activision and even Ubisoft this gen are far worse at exploiting releases and all that.
Anyways I played through all of the Thief games last year and they blew me away. It's sounding like this one will be somewhat of a reboot? With Garret again though. If it's not Stephen Russell, no sale!
I have tons of faith in Eidos Montreal though. Invisible War probably had more original Deus Ex staff on board than Human Revolution did, but having played those two back to back I'd say HR was better in every single way. The gameplay and mechanics were pretty damn faithful to the original formula for the series and it's easily one of my favorite games this gen. Better than the original? No way. Will this Thief game top the originals? No way, I'm sure. But I'm betting it'll be pretty damn good.
HR's level design doesn't even compare to the old Thief games though. So that will be a challenge, along with getting the atmosphere and music right. If there's one thing a lot of people praise about HR that I'm not totally on board with, it's the music. To me like a lot of modern games out there, it was just far too ambient. Not memorable at all or melodic like the original game, my favorite moments musically were hearing the radios throughout the game playing the classic tracks. I hope they seriously just consider bringing Eric Brosius on board to do the music here, because I have no idea how they could get it right otherwise. The tricky thing with Thief is that the music was always pretty ambient, but it's still really dynamic and hauntingly melodic, this constant droning noise that submerged you into the world. Both HR and Dishonored utterly failed at capturing this element in my eyes and just had basically random background noise that didn't do much, so it'll be really tough to accomplish this I'd say.
Another thing that will really irk me is if this has any 3rd person elements at all. Yes you could switch in Deadly Shadows and it wasn't terrible, but I definitely do not want sticky cover systems in this that pan out behind Garret. Keeping it completely and utterly in the first person perspective compliments the games focus on intensity and stealth. You're not supposed to know what's behind you.
Dishonored was a solid game in my book, damn good stuff. But the powers ended up being ridiculous and at times it felt like they game wasn't sure what it wanted to be, Thief, or Bioshock. I already know this is probably going to be way better. I've never been huge on stealth though, but Thief's gameplay was incredibly captivating and really pulled me in, I hope this can somehow hit all the right notes for me as well.
I've got my skeptics for some specifics, but yeah I'm definitely very excited and optimistic about this.
So Thief 4 anybody?

I'm glad I'm not the only Thief fan boy here haha. I had the exact same reaction to these when I first saw them, and have continued to soak up every bit of information related to the game since. For anyone else who wants to see how the game's coming along, feel free to check the Game Informer hub.

Merged Topics.
I'm looking forward to this, as long as they get the soundtrack and atmosphere right and don't make Garret into Gothic-Ezio I'll be happy.

Thief reboot impeded by office politics, high-level departures
I'd heard rumors about this previously, but this article has me worried. It sounds like it's in development hell.

I read about this recently to. Am I the only person who would rather let this die gracefully instead of getting a crappy release which may well kill the series anyway?Wispmage wrote:Thief reboot impeded by office politics, high-level departures

Well I can't speak to you being the only person, but I don't feel that way. I know it's not the same developer, but the recent reboot of Tomb Raider is one of the best games of this generation. Maybe if they can get some of the same oversight at Square Enix to manage this product at Eidos Montreal, we can have another amazing reboot of a beloved franchise.Ack wrote:I read about this recently to.
