SNES video problem

Post by bmoc »

I am getting a strange video problem with my SNES. Specifically on Super Mario World. When I get to the bosses, certain part of the screen flicker or outright disappear. On the first boss, the tilting island flickers and on the second boss, he is mostly invisible but sometimes flickers when he climbs the wall. I should also note that I have 2 copies of Super Mario World and they both do this.

I also have a few games such as Jurassic Park that I have had issues with too. I just wrote those off as bad carts but now I think there is a problem with the SNES itself. On Jurassic Park, you can't see the island on the intro and Grant is unable to move in any direction.

I have thoroughly cleaned all my carts and the cart slot so I am pretty sure that is not the issue.

Any idea what the problem is and how to fix it?

PPU possibly going kaput? Not sure there's much you can do to fix that.

I agree with the above post. It could also be that some leads are broken on the game carts. That would usually cause consistent problems tho. I know when I had a broken lead on an NES board, none of the sprites would display properly. Do some of your snes games work 100% properly?

Since it happens the same on 2 carts, I think you are correct to think the cause is with the console. If I'm thinking properly, the guy walking on the walls, and the moving platform are processed in the same way, so whatever processes that is probably bad.

I have gotten through some games completely such as Mario Rpg and some Gameboy games with a Super Gameboy. I've played through many levels of a few other games such as Donkey Kong Country 2 and Mega Man X.

It's a shame I can't fix it but at least I didn't spend money on the chemicals to de-yellow it! I guess it's time to start looking for a new one. Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, its always a shame to have to replace a console. Maybe try to find someone who has one to test the problematic games on, to isolate the problems once and for all. But the way thing sound, it has to be the console.

I have had a very similar problem with my original (92 or 03) SNES. It started happening with ALL games. Random garbage would flicker in random areas. After getting the cart slot pins beyond clean, I determined it might be the PPU or RAM.

Now, I don't know if there's video RAM intergrated in the PPU(s), but I do know that there's a stand alone RAM chip on the mobo. I have another busted SNES that I was planning on swapping the chips with, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

you could try re flowing the ICs if that doesn't work id say its going to be scrap unless you find a replacement chip.
