know of a Proper Xbox Softmod guide?

Ive been looking around for a proper guide to get an Xbox softmod happening. Ive looked around the Xbox-Scene site, but everything there just hotlinks to another page, assuming the reader knows what theyre doing. Theyre really appear to be dozens of methods, approaches, and software to get a proper softmod working.
So if anyone can send some resources, information or pointers my way to break down what needs to be done for a softmod ill be very greatful. thanks.

I would recommend a chip. I've heard softmods are iffy. The chips are very easy to install as long as you know the basics of soldering.

Best, most reader-friendly guide I ever found. I still looked up a lot of supplemental information elsewhere, but this was the guide that walked me through softmodding my 'box. I've never had a problem since, so if you're uncomfortable with soldering, give this a try.

If you've got to buy a copy of Splinter Cell and an Action Replay anyway, just go ahead and buy a chip. Installation is easy, and the xecuter bios has tons of great features.

But, and I ask because I haven't done this, do you really need the exploit and everything? Why not just pull out the HDD, plug it into your desktop and replace the dashboard that way? Wouldn't that work?

From what ive read, that does work...but theres always that slim chance that you can send a shock into the drive and totally fry it.

This might have been true a year ago but I have never seen issues with the softmod using the save game hack. I have done maybe 25 softmods in the last year and they are all still working great. I have a SmartXX in my Halo edition Xbox and I have my black standard xbox softmoded and both play the same CDrs and games from the HDD and I'm running XBMC on both.
