The Virtual Boy is supposed to be a portable. Yeah, I can't see it either

If we're not counting the Virtual Boy, then I fully agree. I've always hated the controller. And while there are good FPS and 3D platformers, I hate that there is little variety besides that. And besides that, I enjoyed the PS platformers more anyways (Crash Bandicoot series, Spyro series, Pac-Man World, Gex, etc.)

I do own one, however, and do play it from time to time. Just not nearly as much as my other Nintendo consoles.

But you could say that a lot of consoles were aimed at certain niches. NES = side scrollers, Mega Drive = Arcade style games, Saturn = shooters/JRPGs, oXbox = ....FPS? (no idea abou the oXBox's library, so I'm saying this based on the stereotype, which I'm sure someone can prove wrong  ), and that didn't made them consoles not worth owning. It's just that with the exception of the NES and partially the Mega Drive, not providing a full range of games limits your sale's potential.

But then again I can only think of 4-5 consoles that had a wider range of games available. The 3 Playstations, the Nintendo handhelds and the SNES.

Can't say I agree. Both the NES and the Genesis had a large variety of games available on them.

I would say that "sidescroller" is a bit too broad a term to call a "niche" of the NES, especially for its time. The NES has great beat em ups, action games, platformers, rpgs, puzzlers, and even racing/sports games. (and others that I am probably just unfamiliar with).

People who love the n64's library befuddle me. Also people who say Panzer dragoon saga is the best RPG of all time can kiss my ass. It's good, but hardly the best rpg ever made. It's not even the best saturn game made.

I think the same of most 8-bit games, but imo it has a lot to do with having played those games when you were a kid. I am far more patient with early 3D games than I should be, cause that's what I grew up playing. I can't stand pre-NES games on the other hand :(

Well I can say the 3D games on the N64 have held up a helluva lot better than the Playstation titles from the time. Especially platformers.
