While this would be functional, the video quality would pale in comparison to RGB. I would not go this route if you can avoid it. Unless of course you are on a tight budget.
And how would a SCART cable + Sync Strike improve the image quality & would it work with my TV?
The Sync Strike takes the sync signal from your RGB source and cleans it up removing any potential distortions such as jailbars and the like. It can also boost the sync signal if it is weak. Some TVs will have issues displaying RGB if the sync signal is not clean. With a Sync Strike the simplest setup for your TV would be: PS1 > SCART cable > Sync Strike > VGA cable > TV.

As for whether it would work on your TV...well...I suppose it would depend on how well your TV scales the image on its own. Most PS1 games run at 240p but there are a few that don't. If you ran into a problem with the Sync Strike and your TV, that is likely going to be the culprit. That is why I recommended taking a look at the SLG-in-a-box since it would handle the scaling. At least that is my understanding of it.
-New PS1 SCART cable out of the two listed by bmoc (does it matter which one?) + Sync

It probably won't matter which one unless you plan to use lightgun games. If that is the case then get the first one I listed.

I hope this helps. RGB can be confusing at times.

So no S-Video then. Phew, we got that out of the way.
As for the SCART cable I have I've currently taken it apart & while I can't take an image of what it looks like I'll describe the layout...
(Back connectors which wires are attached to)
The top 4th, 6th & 8th connectors have 220uf's attached (I wonder if I could reuse them for a custom component cable...) with blue, green & pink-orange wires coming off them respectively. The first four bottom wires are red, white, light grey & light brown and the
seventh and tenth have black and yellow wires. So Composite or RGB?
Seeing the wires on my GameCube SCART cable it's pretty similar but has things like an extra 220uf and I think wire placement differences.
SLG-in-a-Box is something I can't afford. But I might be able to afford the Sync Strike thing.
Also, will it look nice if I use the GameCube SCART cable with the Sync Strike?
So I guess I'll see if the cable's RGB or not & if it isn't I'll get a new one.
And if that doesn't look good I'll either use it with the Sync Strike or mod a Component cable. Which is better?

Unfortunately I am not knowledgeable about the innards of SCART cables so I will have to let someone else answer that.

However after further research, it looks like the Sync Strike is designed to be used in conjunction with a scaler on modern displays. I believe my previous post may be incorrect. It probably won't work for you. I'd do some further reading here: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=37285

I'd look into it more but I have to be off in a bit. However I am thinking that finding an old CRT TV may be your best and cheapest option.

The 220uf caps tell me that it's likely RGB. Does your TV's SCART connector actually accept RGB? Maybe it's not switching over into RGB mode for some reason?

I'd have to come back later to check the pinout more closely.

A scaler would get out of my budget so if the SCART cable isn't RGB I may have to mod a component cable.

I agree then if you are dead set on using your LCD instead of a CRT. Best of luck! :D

You may have mis-understood my post. You can't get component out of a PS1 natively, you'd have to transcode it.

The cable I made turns a PS2 component cable into a PS1 RGB cable by adding the 220uf caps (which are in your SCART RGB cable already).

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
Consoles: I have too much stuff
Arcade: No seriously, I have too much stuff. Someone grab a shovel and dig me out of my basement.

Is that really all I'd have to do? Just remove the caps and solder them to the component cable?

That can't work right by itself. SCART RGB is red, green, blue, sync.

Component only has three wires.

Funny, because the SCART PS1 cable has only 3 220uf's while my GameCube SCART has 4. I wonder if that has to do with anything...
N64/NES/FC/SNES/SFC/GB (SGB)/GBC (Black)(SGB)/FDS/Satellaview/Genesis/Mega Drive/Master System & maybe N64DD/GBC/GBA.
