In my experience with Ngages, it sounds like your unit got wet. It should show a charging bar, but if it just turns off after 30 seconds it sounds like water damage.

I really want to get an N-Gage, but I've seen a couple online that the seller describes the device having the same issue as yours. are these devices poorly built and common occurrence or are these just the unlucky abused phones for sale?

I really don't know, man. You mentioned you got it off ebay.. You didn't get one of those from a Hong Kong seller did you?
It wasn't a Hong Kong seller. Some guy from Wisconsin. I decided to return it though, anyways. Hoping to find one that works someday, but I'm in no hurry.

Get a QD if you can. You wont have to remove the battery to change games then.
