Defiance, new sci-fi show, real sci-fi for a change

Post by d123456 »

I am a huge sci-fi fan.
I just finished watching the pilot. Wow!
OK, it's no Firefly, but what is?
This is real sci fi for a change. All kinds of different aliens living together after a war.
cool blue laser type weapons. Lots of background actors. It looks really big.
This show totally anihalates shows like Terra Nove (bad sci-fi). It is much better than Skyfall, Skyfall is just OK.
I like Revolution as well, still that is not as good as this.
I rate Defiance based on the pilot alone a 9. Everything looks probable. Very stylish.
Any sci-fi fans here that enjoyed the pilot? It's a must watch if you like sci-fi. If you didn't watch it, watch it when you get a chance and let me know what you think.

I watched about 10 minutes of it the other night early in the morning and under the influence of pain meds and passed out. haha. It seems promising, I keep meaning to go back and watch it.

I'm just waiting for something on TV to match the awesomeness of the BSG reboot. For me, that was the last truly amazing Sci Fi show on TV. Early reviews on this show seem mixed, and this whole MMORPG tie in seems...weird.

I'll wait to see what more racketboy members have to say about it before I decide whether or not to watch it. I already have too many shows on my plate already

I thought it was an awesome sci-fi show, as well. A serious approach with a good budget and a story to tell.

I am not involved in the MMO part of it, and I enjoyed the pilot a lot and didn't feel lost whatsoever. So I don't think the game part is required to keep up with the series.

Even though I love sci-fi, I saw the preview for this and could only say "Uh, so what's it about?", it looked like there was 5000 things going on at once and was probably attempting to do way too much.

Who knows? I'll be keeping an eye on it.

Have either of you ever seen the original BSG? If you had, you'd know how horribly the remake ruined things. I'm not totally against a different take on some things (I like Ultimate X-Men just as much as the regular series and I seriously loved JJ Abrams take on Star Trek), but for someone who grew up watching the original series, the new BSG was just awful on every level.

I thought the pilot was ok, but I think episode 2 dropped in quality.

It is has some interesting parts, but it is too often it is a generic tv drama that just happens to have some people with make up effects and dressed as aliens.
The beginning when they were cruising around the Wasteland and all that was promising. But I mostly dislike the town aspect. The son of the white gangster aliens just looks and acts like some emo teenager. The main character has also already softened from a hardcore drifter and war vet into a cliched protagonist.
I also didn't like that final battle. The convenient cliff with walls and nice pathway to hide behind. Everything that occurred was just very improbable.
I will probably still watch it, but the show had a lot of promise, a pretty cool setting and world. I just think they are wasting it with inconsistent writing, mostly boring and eye-roll inducing characters, and it just feels too 'TV", if that makes sense.

It made the cylons cooler looking.
It made the cylons something more than a random enemy.
It made some of the cylons hot.
It had some awesome space battles.
Incredible story arc (admittedly kinda blew in season 3, got kinda stagnant).
It had Eddie Olmos.
It had Bodie Olmos.
The first season was very reminiscent of Robotech/Macross (in a huge ship with limited supplies/weapons, under constant attack, trying to get home).
It had the coolest Season 3 opener ever.
It had an epic final battle.

Yeah man. It totally screwed up BSG from 78. This was way cooler:

Some of us like the low budget and retro grunge of it. I prefer it.

But then I also don't care to watch anything on a network named Syfy.

Invalid argument. It wasn't "SyFy" when BSG was airing.
