I started a thread a few weeks ago about considering diving into AES. Not necessarily away from MVS, but just into AES with the goal to test the waters and see how I like it.

So far i've done really well to avoid duplicates across the libraries. It's been very interesting to learn about the varying print runs across the (3) regions, types of cases (snap, slip over, carton box), variants (dog tags, manuals), and the entire bootleg / conversion process and what all goes into that.

I won't elaborate too much but am happy to answer questions as they arise.

The conversions are really interesting to me. Many of the quality MVS titles weren't released as homecarts (Super Dodge Ball, Money Idol Exchanger, Captain Tomaday, Prehistoric Isle 2, Zupapa and quite a few others).

There are (3) things that can happen with these games. A bootleg, a cheap conversion, a "legit" conversion.

A bootleg is just that, a hack, a way to create the game w/o original game chips.
A cheap conversion is typically an original MVS game, but some of the roms might be flash or mask roms, not all authentic SNK parts.
A "legit" conversion uses a legit MVS board of the same game and then a donor cart, and is simply lined up to create an AES version of the game.

It is more complicated than this, but this is a very brief cliff's notes version. These conversions will come with very nice artwork and case, and sometimes a manual.

Conversions can be very collectible, particulary legit conversions of non-released games.

A legit conversion requires: An original MVS cart of the game you want to make into an AES conversion. A sac game (a sacrificed cheap game), know how of which boards make the best donor and how to lay it all out, and then some skills to create the artwork and manual. So, seeing as most non-released AES games tend to be higher-end on the MVS scene, most conversions are minimum $150 and all the way up to $400.

Say you are converting a $150 MVS cart, then a $30 sac cart, then artwork and cart label, then time, and you're looking at a $250 game and they are quite collectible. While there aren't limits on how many people can convert, there are limits on the available MVS carts, particularly the rarer-pricier ones.

Some rare AES games are also converted as well, like Kizuna Encounter and the Metal Slug games. Some ebay and most forum sellers are honest and call it a conversion, and price it accordingly, however some folks who have a really well done conversion will pass it off as original. As you risk damaging the cart and the label in opening a cart, most people will not do that for you, so you have to have extreme confidence when making a larger purchase.

Ok, on to what i've received so far:

My first games, just dipped my toes into the pool:

Then I went in a little deeper:

A look at snap-case vs. slip-over case:
Image
A look inside the two - the snap-case has a fully hardened plastic interior, the flip cases have a flimsier plastic internal (removable) cart holder-liner:

A size comparison: Shockbox-AES snap-case, AES slip-over case -MVS mini box- SFC box

Cart Size - MVS/AES/SFC:

I have a few more games arriving soon - my first conversions, so i'm excited to get my hands on them and see how they look in person!

an interesting fact for those getting into NGPC collecting. There was a later "slimline" model released -- I believe only in Japan (?) that not only is slightly smaller, but features (supposedly) better screen and (supposedly) better batter battery life -- though in fairness, the NGPC's battery life is pretty awesome anyway.

If you're browsing auctions etc this can be tricky, but here's your hint to differentiate: the standard NGPC has 'COLOR' written in block lettering, while the slimline has it written in a cursive font.

That's right. Wasn't quite thinking. Disregard my suggestion (but the game's still good)

Man. The first time I ever opened an AES cart was my friend's Kizuna Encounter.

I thought I was going to have a fucking heart attack.

But it was successful! No label damage or creasing whatsoever.

I know there's been a lot of talk about guys getting into MVS in this thread, this auction is over in 3 hours and would make a great starter bundle, a couple $30-50 games mixed in.

The working 1-slot mobo would be an easy flip if you didn't need that item.

I'd value at $275 for a reseller to make profit and $325 for someone looking to get a big bundle at reasonable discount.

Nice looking kit, Bryan!

I'm holding out for an AES version now. Got sniped on one yesterday at last second, had a bid of $255 and it went for one bid higher :/

I wish my OCD would allow me to collect kits, but i'd need them ALL to be kits. The few i've had drove me nuts sitting by their lonesome. There's been some real nice higher end kits on neo lately - Twinkle Star Sprites and Super Dodgeball among others. Been hard to stay away, but I know I won't be able to enjoy them.

It's a solid game with a decent difficulty level.
$60, eh? It's definitely not on my immediate-get list, especially since the AES game is less than half as much!

Another way is thru the handhelds battery door. The original design has a battery door that unhinges from bottom to top, while the "slimline" design unhinges from side to side (left to right).

My collection for the Neo pocket has grown quite nicely since posting this ol' pic here on the site a while back.
Image

My entire NGPC. Actually I also own a brand new Nyko Shock n'Rock accessory for the system, and one of the most rarest of my games... US cart of Faselei! (which was only available via a specific blister pak) is no where to be found at the moment when the pic was taken :?

Image

Top portion: Cardboard cases for US games, all CIB. Official NGPC travel case, Nyko brand Link Cable.

Image

Bottom portion: Carts on the Left corner part of my original pack in games from my Blister 6 pak console bundle purchased new (KoF R2 in the handheld and MS 1st Mission sold). Right corner showing Euro Carts for Last Blade, Neo Pocket Tennis and Gals Fighters. Scattered across the pic are Hardshell cases for games KoF R1, SamSho!, Neo Cherry Master, MS 1st Mission and Neo Cup 98. Loose Carts scattered across are Sonic Pocket Adventure, MS 2nd Mission and US version of Crush Roller (Cart and manual only). A very addictive puzzler and getting somewhat hard to find. Cardboard cased games include US versions of Gals Fighters, Dive Alert, and the JPN release of Last Blade.
Note: Last Blade and Gals Fighters are perhaps 2 of the best fighters on the system by far
And Yes, that is Vice helping herself to a handful of dat "Pocket Power!" 8)
