I've never thought of the AVGN as a true reviewer. I've always viewed his show as entertainment. I'm pretty sure he doesn't consider himself a serious reviewer, either.

I've always enjoyed IrateGamer more for that kind of "review". His jokes are a little better than the juvenile fart and poop jokes that AVGN throws out (don't get me wrong, I like AVGN, but sometimes he is a little too juvenile), and I enjoy the recurring characters. But at the same time, you only get like 3-4 reviews a year from the guy. And despite all the ridiculous "IrateGamer is an AVGN rip-off" comments that plague his videos, I've always found his show different enough with it's own character to it.

TurboViews is a great show for serious reviews, but then he only reviews TurboGrafx-16 and Turbo-CD games. Racketboy's own MetalJesus is a great source, too.

I really like Classic Game Room and CGRUndertow, but I'd be a fool to call them "serious" reviewers.

It's superficial, I know, but I really appreciate production values. The higher the production values, the more likely I am to watch it. Which is why I'll get down on some Classic Game Room, but not, say, Biff's Jaguar Game Reviews.

AVGN simply has better production values, and a better collection. I agree that I don't really like the humor or the skits, I mainly tune in to watch some historical accounts of obscure stuff, even if I disagree with his opinion. It's also why I can stomach stuff like Screw Attack's Game Vault, even if I think the crew has god-awful opinions. They simply produce a good show.

And, recommending strafefox yet again, that all adds up to why I think Splash Wave (Sample: is the best show I've seen online. Broadcast-level production values, a focus on the obscure, little opinions thrown around in favor of simple facts, and they're unobtrusive and short.

Terrific show.

Very entertaining, yes. I just wish it was Craig doing more of them lately. Nick I can't stand.

Two-cents (Even though nobody cares):
I like AVGN and Classic Game Room in the way that I like Beavis and Butt-head. I really enjoy the production quality, and the juvenile jokes. I don't necessarily watch it for the reviews, but when Mark (from CGR) gets serious, I think he can do a damn good one.

I'm not super into reviews, so I don't know many "real" reviewers. I tend to just click a few of the first videos that pop up and maybe watch the beginning of a "Let's play". I normally play a game based off of written reviews, or if I saw it in AVGN/CGR and had never heard of it before.

Have you ever watched Game Sack? Their schtick is that one of them is a hardcore Nintendo fanboy, the other is a hardcore Sega fanboy and they review games together. It seems like they're going for a Siskel and Ebert vibe and they actually pull it off rather well. They cover a pretty wide range of stuff and it's always interesting, even when the humor falls flat. I'd say it's my third favorite gaming series, behind AVGN and Turbo Views.

Backloggery sucks. It's turning gaming, which is supposed to be a hobby for entertainment, into a boring job of filling out spreadsheets.

Some people find that sort of thing interesting. Stat tracking, etc.

Indeed it does. It's at least has the bar-graphs going for it. But other than that, it's just a freaking list, I can do that on Microsoft Word. I don't understand why it's so popular amongst collectors.

VGCollect.com and Darkadia are much better, IMO, as it actually displays the box-art on shelves and looks very nice.

It's just about tracking and publicly showing how many games you've beaten. It's not really a collection tool, per say, as you could track games that you beat via emulation/renting/borrowing from friends, etc., if you like. But you don't have to use it that way. You could also use it to track the games beaten in your particular collection, though for showing off a collection, not so much. It's not a great collection tracking resource, but that's not really what it is for. I use Netflix and GoodReads for similar tracking for movies and books, though I admit that both of these are better fleshed out systems. Games are a bit more nebulous though, which makes them harder to track. Items like Flash or browser-based games, preloaded titles, titles gained through digital distribution, etc...a bit harder to follow.

For actual collection tracking, I use RFGeneration to help me keep tabs on my collection. My RFGen account is always up to date. My Backloggery account is often out of date, but I tend to update it in clumps.
