Hopefully. I don't want to get involved in Chechnya. Afghanistan is less of a mess.Luke wrote:Ack wrote: In short, what caused these guys to go from attacking their preferred target, Russia, to instead target the US? And how will our relations with Russia develop as a result of this?
Russia will release an apologetic statement, ask that the US and them straighten relations on the fight on terrorism and things will resume as usual.
That's my guess.

Oh I don't disagree that Chechnya has a tumultuous past. Russia's involvement in the Chechen wars parallels the level of success we had in Vietnam. Comparatively speaking, I'm talking about in terms of combating an insurgency, not on a level of inflicted casualties. I don't think there has to be a motive other than the suspects' past and world views shaped by conflict and war, and they resorted to violence because of an inability to cope.Ack wrote:Chechnya is a well known breeding ground for Islamic terrorism, but up to this point it has been considered an almost exclusively Russian problem. Chechen terrorists have bombed various targets throughout Russia and particularly Moscow for years as well as launched various insurgent attacks throughout their home region. While it seems in this case the younger brother was influenced by the older, the question is: how and why did he get into the US, where did he receive his demolitions training, and what was the purpose behind his attack?Blu wrote:How so? The news is reporting they were ethnically Turkish, but lived in Chechnya/Kazakhstan. Seeing as they were both here legally, if anything it might give ammunition to the current immigration debate.Ack wrote:They're from Chechnya. That's gonna make our foreign policy interesting.
I honestly doubt we'd make a pursuit of Chechnya--seems like a similar situation to our previous theaters of war. I doubt we want to fight another insurgency.

From what I've read, both men had Visas to study at one point, and were here legally. Probably received demolitions training in Chechnya at some point, and motive, who knows?
I hope this all gets resolved, and we can bring to justice the other suspect. Can't say I have any pity or sympathy for the 26 year old, but I hope that as soon as this is over, we can begin the mending process for Boston.

Everything north of Georgia effectively belongs to Moscow. Forget any ridiculous notions of invading foreign soil. My hypothesis is that those tools did this act of their own accord. That said, what had gone on in the north Caucasus over the past two decades is of epic tragic proportions that cannot be trivialised in the slightest, and its effects are still felt throughout other conflict zones and Russia itself.
Idiots, their people have suffered more than enough stigmatisation already. Hopefully the younger brother heeds his uncle's advice.

It's over. They got him. They were able to take him alive, as they'd hoped to. Thank the gods, there was no bloodshed and he apparently gave himself up without a fight.

I'm glad they caught him, I believe his brother bullied him into doing it. Can't wait to hear the story about it after 12 hours of watching the coverage.Retrodude wrote:It's over. They got him. Re: RE: Marathon Explosions: Boston Area Members OK?
I can't imagine how much fight I'd have left if I had been in 2 gun shoot outs with police, wounded for hours, then getting flash-banged the shit out of. Crazy stuff. 19 years old... Still can't get over that.Retrodude wrote:It's over. They got him. They were able to take him alive, as they'd hoped to.
