Several towns around me are in lockdown, and staff members from those areas obviously haven't been able to get in to work this morning. Bleh. Too close for comfort.

They're from Chechnya. That's gonna make our foreign policy interesting.

How so? The news is reporting they were ethnically Turkish, but lived in Chechnya/Kazakhstan. Seeing as they were both here legally, if anything it might give ammunition to the current immigration debate.

Stay safe, guys! If your town is on lockdown... now is a good time to play video games in the basement. Seriously though, it sounds like this suspect has no regard for human life.

I'm listening to CNN and all the people they've talked to who know the guy are genuinely shocked he would do such a thing. Current speculation is that he was influenced by his older brother. Kind of tragic if you think about it.

Chechnya is a well known breeding ground for Islamic terrorism, but up to this point it has been considered an almost exclusively Russian problem. Chechen terrorists have bombed various targets throughout Russia and particularly Moscow for years as well as launched various insurgent attacks throughout their home region. While it seems in this case the younger brother was influenced by the older, the question is: how and why did he get into the US, where did he receive his demolitions training, and what was the purpose behind his attack?

In short, what caused these guys to go from attacking their preferred target, Russia, to instead target the US? And how will our relations with Russia develop as a result of this?

Russia will release an apologetic statement, ask that the US and them straighten relations on the fight on terrorism and things will resume as usual.

That's my guess.

There are more important matters and inconveniences to take care of right now.

I hope this stand off doesn't end in a blaze of stupidity.
