Yeah, but all they did was translate the menus. Officially localizing something like Mother 3 would be a much bigger undertaking.

Why don't they just license out the fan translation, or at least use their work and improve on it themselves. Probably save themselves a lot of money.

IIRC, one of the PSP Ys games uses a slightly modified fan-translation.

The translators are just fans of the series, I'd expect they would feel honored if Nintendo asked to use their translation and just having their names in the credits would be a dream to them.

Tomato (translator of Mother 3) has specifically said that if Nintendo ever wanted to use their translation they would hand it over whole heartedly for free.

Man, I just played Earthbound. Borrowed it from a buddy of mine who got it for $80 a couple years back. I hope it doesn't come out exclusively for the Wii U's VC.

I can't remember what game it was, but some groups ROM dump was used in a classic game compilation at one point. As I recall there was a tag they left in it that someone noticed later.
