Can SegaCD read CD-RW's?

Post by bdlou »

I see contradicting information, and no real tutorials. I have a Sega CD Model 2 and would love to be able to use CD-RW's on it. Is this something that is possible?

According to wiki: "Also, CD-RWs cannot be read in some CD-ROM drives built prior to 1997." So most likely not, though a late model Saturn might.

You really want to use CD-RWs and not CD-Rs? CD-Rs are soooo cheap. You really want to burn, erase, and reburn discs?

In a nutshell, yes.

It's harder on the laser to read RW's. Some systems you have to tweak the laser pot to get it to read them (dreamcast iirc). Do yourself and your systems a favor and just use quality CDRs.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
Consoles: I have too much stuff
Arcade: No seriously, I have too much stuff. Someone grab a shovel and dig me out of my basement.

THIS.

CDRWs followed by CDRs make the Laser work harder to track the data versus a pressed disc. Another point to consider is the Dreamcast is also easier to replace due to so many out there. The Saturn console tends to be more expensive to find a replacment when it gives out, best to use original pressed discs when possible.

Thanks for all the replies. Sounds like it's best to not go this route then. I was looking to avoid another stack of CDRs, and I'm not looking to get in to the business of collecting again. There's nothing out there like the Mega Everdrive for loading ISOs on the real hardware is there?

Real hardware no, but you could always just rip cds and then use a modded Xbox. Why not just buy the handful of sega cd games that are worth while to play? I mean there's only around 20 games anyone would ever want to play.

For the Sega CD, no. At least, not that I know of. There is stuff like that available, some times hit or miss, but currently nothing for the Sega CD yet. My hope is to eventually have the ability to boot from a HDD or SD card or whatever for every game console. For example, you can boot games from a HDD with the PS2. And there's some device that'll let you load games from an SD card for the Dreamcast. Hopefully one day we'll have an option like this for every console.
