There's also a 161-1 AES cart that I've heard is pretty good, but it costs like $700.

Well, you can also burn pretty much any NGCD game you want and readily play it.

There are too many games not ported to it and such slow load times to make that a benchmark for determining how good an AES/MVS game will be.foxhound1022 wrote:Well, you can also burn pretty much any NGCD game you want and readily play it.

Honestly, as long as it isn't a fighter, the loading times are decent. When I play Aero Fighters 2&3, you just have the initial long load time, which is like 2 min; then the loading between each stage only takes a couple seconds. Even beat 'em ups don't suffer from the horrendous loading times.

I disagree. It's foolish to spend that much money to play shitty rom hacks, even if it's on "original" hardware.mjmjr25 wrote:A bootleg MVS cart is a great way to test out all the games you are considering buying. You might as well just spend $50 on a modded xbox with every neo game emulated properly.
I don't know much about xbox emulation and how good it is, but I know that the neo ports to PS2 and Wii that some folks seem to enjoy, feel hollow to me. Not so much lag, but in-game sounds seem dulled and character sprites are too crisp and look nothing like the original carts. Again, these are ports and not xbox emulation, maybe that retains the original look and feel exactly, but I doubt it.
I'm saying is there are better ways to spend the money if you're just looking to test Neo Geo roms. MAME or a modded xbox can emulate Neo games 100% afaik
wclem is obviously worried about not having access to the full library of titles with the NGCD, he should know that the 161-in-1 is padded with 64 bootleg/hacked/fake versions of games and is missing some of the best titles in the library:

Well, no. Not if you aren't familiar with emulation and don't want to spend time finding and downloading roms and hoping everything works out.
Is emulation cheaper? Yup. Faster and easier? Well, certainly not to me. Can I use a legit neo pad? Nope. I think it's an each his own situation - not bad advice. There are many folks I respect who say the lates in-1's play so well they've actually sold off all but their favorite carts.
All the in-1's have different game lists, so not sure which one yr using, but most that don't have Sam Sho V do have Sam Sho V Special, which would be better, imo. Of the other best games you listed, most of those are in fact on NGCD (Ninja Masters, Magician Lord, etc). The only quality games generally not on in-1's are Waku Waku 7 and Twinkle Star Sprites, which are available vie emulation and were ported to other platforms.
As for the hacks you reference - geez, I consider that a strong selling point. A whole bunch of games not available anywhere else but a bootleg cart and they play well? Why is that a negative? I'm lost.

MAME isn't too bad to set up anymore, and the MVS library is very functional on it. While I still own a fair share of the SNK ports, I still prefer MAME to them. You can't use a Neo pad (without some modding), but you can use 360/PS3 sticks (without a hassle) which to me lends a more "genuine" experience than a console controller. Is emulation cheaper? Yup. Obviously I still prefer the original hardware where applicable, but for someone merely looking to scope out titles to see if they'll be interested - I think MAME is a decent way to do so.
However.
Getting the MVS setup will allow you to start purchasing the games you want right away. As stated before, the titles are cheap and they hold their value quite well. It's a fun system to have and will definitely get attention from most anyone who sees it. Also, it just feels better to play games on original hardware. To me anyway.
The in-1 AES/MVS carts hold their value quite well. So after you decide what you like you can probably sell/trade it to finance a good portion of the games you like.

Then the big question is, where do you guys suggest to buy the consolized system or a board to consolize?
I know there is the Neo forums and Ebay but you may know better places. Also, how hard is it to consolize a board?

Sure, it's easier for some. But not for all.mjmjr25 wrote:Well, no. Not if you aren't familiar with emulation and don't want to spend time finding and downloading roms and hoping everything works out.

It is still a fact that emulating is the smarter option for someone like wclem who wishes to try out Neo games while staying frugal.
It is just too much money to spend on a bootleg when it is nothing but means to an end.
Especially when you're going through the trouble of building a CMVS to play it!
Certainly not faster and easier in that sense.
There are arcade sticks and MagicBox adapters for the Xbox. Can I use a legit neo pad? Nope. I think it's an each his own situation - not bad advice.
NeoGeoX USB sticks for the computer.
This is absolutely a "to each his own" situation. Yes. But wclem asked for advice and I believe spending the time and money on a CMVS only to buy a bootleg 161-in-1 cart to "test" Neo games is not good advice. So I said something.
I understand everyone's gotta start somewhere! Which is why I'm trying to start you off on the right foot. My advice is to buy a slice of the cake and enjoy it fully, rather than just licking all the nauseating yellow frosting off the top of one big cake. also your poop will be worth more money down the line.wclem wrote:Gotta start somewhere man!
how's that for an ANALogy?
And they were able to sell off their carts because they will always be sought after.mjmjr25 wrote: There are many folks I respect who say the lates in-1's play so well they've actually sold off all but their favorite carts.
Who's to say the same of these bootlegs?
I'm not using any of them. but the one we've been discussing this whole time is the 161-in-1All the in-1's have different game lists, so not sure which one yr using,
I just wanted it to be clear to wclem and whoever else is under the assumption that the 161-in-1 cart is the end all be all of the Neo library, that is is not. It is missing a lot of titles and in actuality only contains 94 "legit" games (not 161!)but most that don't have Sam Sho V do have Sam Sho V Special, which would be better, imo. Re: Let's talk about your NG MVS / AES / CD & NGPC collectin
Nice thread. In my opinion the 161 in 1 in worth it. I used to have a 100 in 1 but sold it to fund another project.
So easy to use in a cab over an Xbox or MAME.
I need to show off some more off my stuff so I guess its time to get some pics taken. Keep looking for SVC Mjmjr25 you might get lucky. SVC was the first Neo Geo game I bought after my cab deal, I got lucky and snagged a kit for $100 shipped
. I also have a link in my sig detailing my experience with my first cab.

Not gonna do the multi-quote thing.
But you are suggesting an xbox, modded, which he may not have, and then converters for pads. I guarantee he could resell a multicart and CMVS before he'd resell a modded oxbox and converters. So there is no real risk to the investment.
The in 1's have been around for quite awhile and still sell within a day or two of listing on neo / shmups / ebay always in the same ballpark price. No reason to think they wouldn't maintain their value. The emulation option has been around awhile as well and hasn't affected the prices of multicarts.
I don't dispute many folks can load and play MAME very well. From a setup perspective, i've personally never had an easy go of it on multiple computers and have never had a single usb (microsoft brand pad) load an play w/o a ton of tinkering and trouble shooting. I am not the only one w/the same experience if you read the SotM threads over the past year or even the shmups forums STGT thread - constant troubles. It's awesome that some folks load and play, but it shouldn't be desribed as something you just do if you have a PC. PC has to have requirements and you have to know exactly which programs to download and then additional troubleshooting. Also, MAME is a typically 1p experience where most of the Neo games are a 2p experience.
I'm telling you that for me, and many others in their 30's, it is much easier to buy a CMVS and a multicart than it is to emulate. This not to mention, I personally hate playing games on a PC and rather enjoy playing on hardware. Again, to each his own.
wclem has seen both sides here I think and can make a decision. Hopefully someone is willing to walk him through MAME setup if he goes that route.
