System - bare bones CMVS, just a consolized 1-slot Motherboard - $200
For $250-275 you can get a half decent enclosure to make it look more consolized
For $300 you can get a kit to build a professional looking one
For $400-500 you can get a very nice looking unit with Component / S-Video and Composite
For $600+ you can get top-end everything (appearance, compatibility, AV out options, etc)

161-1 cart, if you buy on forums or ebay, $100-110. If you buy online from Asia (it's the same cart) then about $80-85.

Cables, would be included with any of the $300 and up systems, and probably included with the lesser value systems as well. If not, AV cable - >$5, AC brick - >$10

You can be playing MVS games on a 161-1 cart for >$300. You can be playing in style for >$600. Every CMVS i've seen uses neo geo inputs, so sticks, bean sticks, and NGCD pads are compatible.

Yeah, I should qualify that statement: "cheapest possible within Neo Geo prices!"

I expect to pay, and pay and pay LOL.

It is in transit as we speak. When I won it I did not know that there were a ton of games that did not get ported. (I am a newb when it comes to Neo Geo.) So I figure if I am going to get into this as may as well go all the way.

Unfortunately my want far out weigh my budget. So I want to get the best pricing I can. I can do all the research in the world and still price myself wrong. I know you guys here know prices on this stuff. My best source of good info is right here!

Why spend all that money to play a bootleg 161-in-1 cart?

You might as well just spend $50 on a modded xbox with every neo game emulated properly.

I came here to mention how cheap it was to do yourself, but $200 for premade? That definitely seems like the route to go if you're just using it for a multicart. I put mine together for a little bit cheaper, but I have to imagine this is a lot cleaner than the one I made. Definitely worth it at that price, and if you're not changing carts, you can always put it in a larger enclosure so aesthetics wouldn't be a factor.

At least this route gives him the option to get the legitimate carts if he gets into it. They don't really break the bank, shipping is the only bad part.

A bootleg MVS cart is a great way to test out all the games you are considering buying. The MVS dedicated boots perform exceptionally well, much better than the multi-platform boots like Blue Elf and Pandora.

I don't know much about xbox emulation and how good it is, but I know that the neo ports to PS2 and Wii that some folks seem to enjoy, feel hollow to me. Not so much lag, but in-game sounds seem dulled and character sprites are too crisp and look nothing like the original carts. Again, these are ports and not xbox emulation, maybe that retains the original look and feel exactly, but I doubt it.

~10-12 games for it

Two questions:

The component only outputs 240p, right?

What's the point of region modding it except to play Samurai Shodown RPG?
Plugged it into the LCD a couple minutes ago, it's displaying 480i
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!
Cheat sheet of my collection, always looking to increase it. 405/677 licensed games, 46/"95" unlicensed
Chronically out of date BST thread
