Additionally, how long should it really take to learn? I don't play WoW, but FFXI has very similar complaints for new vs old. Practically speaking though, MMOs tend to incorporate a lot of padding either way. They can be complicated, but they're not so complicated that they take hundreds of hours just to learn how to play a class.
At least with FFXi as well, there were plenty of terrible players who put in the time years ago, and plenty of good players now who can absorb and apply information without needing to practice it 1000x over. Good players will be good, bad players will be bad, all there is to it.
True, there's a lot of needles grinding. But you learn stuff like lore, the world map, team work etc along the way. You get introduced to items that might be very useful later on in the game and so on. WoW has an enormous amount of depth once you reach the level cap, too much for some one who almost just started. I kept learning more and more about the game even after I had spent thousands of hours playing it. Naturally a lot of that was related to expansion packs with new spells, talents and content, but still it took over a thousand hours of practice at the level cap to become a good player, and I was still far from being one that could play at arena tournaments or fight for world firsts, even though I spent more time in the game world than in the "real world".

It's true though that once you get to the top, you're not going to learn much from first hand experience. Theorycrafting, calculations and strategies are learned from various sites intended for hardcore gamers. Unless you're part of the 0.01% of playerbase who scores world first kills, datamines and figures out this stuff for all the other players.

Hrm... More unpopular... I didn't like the Gameboy Zelda titles. Too damn much item trading/upgrading. They took some of the fun stuff from the NES and SNES Zelda games and ruined it.

Good proof of game criticism being silly and inmature is that someone is hunted down ten years later because they gave Deus Ex a poor review while everyone looks astonished at the fact.

There are zero video game reviews on youtube that appeal to me.

Modding videos from Bacteria and others, where you gain knowledge (and grab things, merry Christmas) are awesome and informative... but I find the rest amateurish and a waste of time.

I do like the ones that are pure satire, say the early avgn videos, but I have yet to find a "review" that contains any substance or intelligence. It's all "Hey, here I/we am/are, and we'll be reviewing this game. Here are screenshots, and we'll say the game sucks or is great, but don't expect us to actually explain why. And if you don't like our videos, screw yourself".

Podcasts, on the other hand, usually will provide info on the game, who was involved in production, and explain why the reviewer likes or dislikes the game. But the videos on youtube...terrible.

Ever seen Chrontendo? He's basically slowly reviewing every single Famicom/NES game ever made in chronological order. He goes pretty in depth. Lots of history and cool info like that.

I know that (or I think I do) that the TurboGrafx isn't really your bag. But spida1a's (aka Chris Bucci) reviews of TurboGrafx games are exactly what you're looking for. Entertaining to listen to, goes into the history of the game and what worked and didn't work about games. Here's his channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/spida1a

Here's a particularly entertaining review of Darkwing Duck:
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

I also hate gameplay videos where people talk or have a corner showing their face as they play. I am only interested in commentary if it is well done and gives factual information about the game, not some guy's opinion on whether the game is good, whether he is any good at it, and his really lame attempts at humor throughout. And it just pisses me off further when they suck but blame the game.

I was going to suggest Turboviews, but Stark has good taste and already mentioned it.

So, I will second it. Check it out.

This drives me nuts too.

I've seen quite a few videos like that where the guy immediately begins by saying "I heard this game sucks" and then they proceed to play for a measly 5 minutes, and start bitching within 30 seconds.
