Shadowrun rules, and the best part is that all three 16-bit systems it was released on (SNES, Genesis, Mega CD) got a completely different game.prfsnl_gmr wrote:That reminds me...I don't think that anyone has mentioned the SNES version of Shadowrun. I own it but have only spent a little time with it. My understanding is that it is really good, but not quite as good as the Genesis version (which - apparently - is completely different).BoneSnapDeez wrote: Here's another awesome title no one's mentioned: Dark Half. A gothic JRPG with dark, isometric graphics - looks like Japanese Diablo (screenshot).

Re: Super Nintendo and Super Famicom RPGs
If I may hi-jack this thread for a minute. I'm thinking the next SNES game I'm going to get made is a reproduction cart. I already have Terranigma and Secret of Mana 2 made, so my decision is between Tales of Phantasia and Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. Since we're talking about SNES RPGs I'm wondering which one you guys would recommend. Thanks for any advice.

No love for Brain Lord or Neugier? Otherwise everything I have has already been listed.
I haven't played either, but Tales is more widely regarded.Homerzilla2k wrote:If I may hi-jack this thread for a minute. I'm thinking the next SNES game I'm going to get made is a reproduction cart. I've played a bit of Brain Lord, but had to stop as it wasn't colorblind friendly. I'll get back into it someday with a walkthrough by my side. It was developed by Produce (same company behind The 7th Saga and Mystic Ark) so my hopes are high.o.pwuaioc wrote:No love for Brain Lord or Neugier? Neugier was a pretty decent game from what I recall, too bad that US version never materialized.

Tales... is the better game in my opinion.Homerzilla2k wrote:If I may hi-jack this thread for a minute. I'm thinking the next SNES game I'm going to get made is a reproduction cart. You realize there is an English Tales of Phantasia on the GBA right? I don't know if that effects your decision at all.

I've heard that the GBA port is terrible, though I can't recall why at the moment.

Looks like Tales it is! Thanks for the advice. I actually didn't know about the GBA port (or more than likely read about it in passing and didn't make the connection), but if the translation is better on the SNES version I'll go with that. Plus I wanted to do something cool for my 50th SNES game, so that fits in line. Won't be for a little while though, stupid money.BoneSnapDeez wrote: Tales... is the better game in my opinion.

E.V.O. Search for Eden is one of my personal favorites. I guess it would be considered an Action-RPG. It's basically a side-scroller with massive RPG elements. Every kill gains you points, which you can spend on evolving. Evolving is essentially leveling up, but you control it. It has a great Sci-Fi story. Each era has a different world map. Little did I know when I was younger, the world map transforms through the eras from Pangaea to the continents we know today. I know this cart has shot up in price in recent years, luckily I own a copy from back in the day.
I have yet to play Tales of Phantasia, but every time it's compared to Star Ocean, Tales is said to be the better game. I'll have to play it one of these days.
I really enjoyed Star Ocean. It had everything going for it in my opinion. I've only played it once, but replay value must be high due to all the stuff in the game. It also looks beautiful. And it has a nice Sci-Fi story. Being a fan of the original Star Trek series, I found myself loving the story.Ack wrote:Tales of Phantasia or Star Ocean?

EVO is fantastic. One of the first games I played with an emulator, back on an old Win95 PC. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the cart back in the day and can't afford it now.
Very few people know it's actually a remake of a PC-98 game.
