I used to do this back when playing NES games sometimes for extended periods of time. I don't really do it anymore though.

Doom is the only exception for me and I'll blast some metal or something while playing that, other than that I find it irritating more than anything else... always has to be in-game for me, I've never been annoyed by in game music/sound to the point of needing to mute or play something over it, lol.

I find myself turning off in-game music a lot, i'll usually use the options menu to mute the music but keep all other sound effects etc at max.

This is pretty much essential where any environmental sounds are necessary for progress, e.g in shooters. It's really quite amazing how different a game can feel with alternative music, or perhaps none at all.

I've always been partial to games that have a rather sparse use of sound however, the original Tomb Raider standing out in particular.

Even as a kid playing Pokemon with all of it's repetitive sounds/music, I had my headphones plugged into the Game Boy. I rarely ever listen to anything other than the game's music. For a couple years when I was a teenager, I can recall doing this for some games but not many. This was mainly when my friend was over at my dad's house. We'd blare music and play fighting games a lot.

EDIT:
Now I have the Pokemon battle music stuck in head. Thanks...

I'll listen to a game's music about 95% of the time, the other 5% I'm either playing some grindy RPG and I need a change of pace or I'm stuck in an old game with only one track of music that's slowly crushing my soul alongside the gameplay (Thanks Quest of Ki!).

If I am playing for score in a shmup I will often reach a point where I will turn off BGM and play music through another speaker somewhere. I often find that stuff which begs equal concentration (to music and/or lyrics) actually helps me perform better.

I also like to game when listening to talk radio/sports radio/podcasts - I often play sports games, racers, or other story-light games when listening to these.
