dreamcast, and saturn

hey guys, first post here...
i just had a question about the dreamcast and saturn.
it seems for the most part people REALLY swear by these systems, as far as gameplay and everything goes,
just wondering if their really that worth it and what makes the games/systems good from a gamer and collectors point of view,

Secondly - You are about to ask a whole bunch of sega fanboys if the Sega and Dreamcast are worth it, the answer will be a resounding yes. Both systems have a ton of original and imaginative games as well as a load of first class ports from the might AM2 team. Emulation for either system isnt really quite there yet, so buying the actual console is the only real option to play these games. Neither console is going to cost all that much so as a gamer they are worth getting to experience the fine selection of games that you cant play anywhere else.

Those same set of exclusive games makes them interesting for collectors too. While most of them are cheap, the pair have some of the most expensive and sought after games ever - Radiant Silvergun, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Enemy Zero, Shenmue, Rez...

I think it really depends on what types of games that you enjoy. Since joining I've seen that a lot of the members here are big fans of shmups and fighting games, which have some fantastic entries on those Sega consoles. I, on the other hand, am more into strategy and RPGs. I ended up picking up a Saturn and a Dreamcast to round out my collection. I'd always had my eye on the Saturn for Shining Force III (one of my favorite Sega franchises, before Camelot left and they started milking it), and managed to find a couple more to justify my purchase, which included Virtual-On, another favorite of mine. I then decided to pick up a Dreamcast for the couple of RPGs and Virtual-On: OT. I doubt I'll pick up more games for the Dreamcast for a while, but I'm happy with having it as a part of my collection.

Sega consoles are great for arcade style games, ie: fighters and shmups. Sega consoles also have a tendency towards interesting and quirky games, as well as having games that are unique to their platform.

A lot of dreamcast games were ported though. dreamcast's popularity in part comes from its ease to import and its ease of piracy.

I went to the saturn because its heavier 2d library than the ps1. Examples are Vampire Savior and SF Alpha 2.

yeah it seems like most people swear by the sega consoles
to this day i have not played 1 saturn game or a dreamcast game
but i always see the consoles at flea markets for cheap
i'll prob buy one eventually

definetly though you may not want to get into the expensive stuff as cheap as the hardware and some of the games are its worth it. And to collect for if you have the cash? Hard to beat (maybe neo geo or arcade cabs?)

It's all about the games, man. Do you see titles on these two systems that you want? If so, that is all any gamer or collector needs.

I'm not a Sega fanboy, so objectively speaking, my answer to my question is: Saturn - no, Dreamcast - hell yes.

They're both great systems, I personally like the Dreamcast a bit more partially because there's a lot of great games on it for cheap. The Saturn has some great games, but most of them are terribly expensive. Here's some comparisons:

Best RPG: Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn) - $200; Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast) - $30 or less
Best Beat-Em-Up: Guardian Heroes (Saturn) - $80; Sword of the Berzerk (Dreamcast) - $10-20
Best Action: Burning Rangers (Saturn) - $80-100; Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast) - $10
Best Adventure: NiGHTS Into Dreams (Saturn) - $20 ($60 if you get it w/ the controller);
Best Strategy-RPG: Shining Force III (Saturn) - $80; this is a trick question for the Dreamcast since unless you import one there aren't any strategy-RPGs

Ok, ok, you see what I'm saying. The top five RPGs for the Saturn all cost $60 and up; the five best for the Dreamcast cost less than $30 apiece. You're probably wondering about shmups, as I haven't listed any. I don't know enough about Saturn shmups except that the best are imports and super expensive. Most Dreamcast shmups are also very expensive.

Having said all that, I say if you can get the systems cheap, definitely pick em up. They both have good cheap games for them that are a lot of fun to play. (As well as good expensive games that are a lot of fun to play.)
