Neo Geo CDZ got one coming, what to play?

Post by wclem »

Well I won one over on the BST in the big auction. Gonna play the heck out of it, already bought a spare laser for it LOL.

Now I need some help, I can buy some games but I just cannot afford them all. I also know very little about the games. So I wanna know, first what games I should play in everyones opinion. Second, what games should I buy, and what games I worth trying but I should just burn them (if any). I have zero bootleg stuff left in my collection before anyone hammers me.

I prefer not to just constantly hammer away on the controller. I like to have at least a little strategy in a game. Fighting games that are just not mash, mash, mash. I like shooters but I just dont like hitting the shoot button over and over, just want to hold it down.

So,
what to play, of those what to buy or what to gurn, (not wortht owning)

Do you already own a (C)MVS and/or AES?

Keep in mind there is a huge overlap between MVS/AES/CD titles. Ever see a game that was too expensive in the MVS or AES format? Check out the CD version.

In any case, if you can read Japanese and want to check out a non-MVS/AES title I highly recommend Shinsetsu Samurai Spirits: Bushidou Retsuden (aka Samurai Shodown RPG). It's the only RPG on the system (I think) and a great game.

Can't read Japanese though I would try it if there was a translation or walkthrough.

I have never had an MCS or AES. The price was just too high for me. Though I probably could have gotten one for the price I got the CDZ. Some of the reason I got that one though was because of the trust factor. I trust those two guys that I know they would not rip me off, or sell me something on the edge of dying. The other part was because the games themselves are cheaper.

I have a Neo Geo Gold, though I got mine way cheaper than the release. I do like some of the games on it but from what I can figure it is about 1/8 of what was released. I was gonna mod it to try the other games but it seems like a lot of work to do it and not worth my time (yet).

I have been watching videos etc but I thought I solicit opinions from you guys. I have got a ton of good advice here in the past. I was gonna go over to the actual Neo Geo forum, but I just get a weird vibe from that place.

Looks nice, might be worth trying. Looks like it is challenging enough LOL.

What genre do you prefer, wclem? Fighters / shooters / puzzlers / run 'n gun / platformers / sports???

Obviously, the console you have, the loading for fighters is significantly improved. I'd echo what bone said, look for value.

Something like Viewpoint is a $20 on CD, but $100 on MVS and $300 on AES.

Whereas something like Ninja Masters you're going to pay just as much (maybe more) for the CD version as you are the MVS arcade cart.

Let us know which genres you tend to gravitate to and we can steer you in the right direction.

I would say:
1: Platformers
2: Shooters that default to auto shoot, at least the main weapon. (can only mash so many times LOL)
3: Fighters that are not hyper/turbo style. I like to have at least a little strategy in em
4: Puzzlers of the two player variety are fun.

I tried Nam 75, didnt care for it. Also tried Baseball stars, did not like it either. Though I am up to trying other sports games. The sad fact is though, Neo Geo gold is the extent of my experience LOL.

Magician Lord is a must if you like tough-as-nails action-platformers.

Raguy (titled Blue's Journey in its US MVS/AES variants) is a fantastic cutesy/colorful platformer. I believe it's Japan-only on the NGCD but contains very little text.

Oh and by Neo Geo Gold do you mean the Neo Geo X Gold???

Yeah, Raguy / Magician Lord are about the only 2 straigh-ahead platformers. Raguy does more $ on CD than MVS/AES though, so that is sort of a bummer, about a $45-50 title.

I like Crossed Swords as a fun co-op game, sort of like Wild Guns meets Punch Out, memorizing enemy attack patterns, etc.

Here's a list of NGCD games. Sadly, most of the good Bubble Bobble type platformers and other side-scrolling platformers weren't ported. Tons of shooters and 2D fighters:

If you like Fighters that aren't the same old thing, give Fire Suplex a try. It has a cool story mode and your environment changes with each match. It's sort of like a beat 'em up, fighter, and wrestling game all mashed together. It's fun.

Last Resort and Viewpoint are the 2 best shooters on NGCD, imo. The Sonic Wings games are fun, but are pretty standard fare and available on other systems.
