Valkyrie-Favor wrote:Speaking of new shows, I just watched the first episode of "The Severing Crime Edge." The animation was far better than I expected it to be and it got right into the thick of things. The premise is completely bonkers, but it's presented earnestly. Looks like the central romance is staring up on episode one! That's pretty rare. I really like how they get to the point.

The main characters are adorable but more than a little creepy. I was laughing the whole time. If it stays this good, I think I'll see the whole show.
Oh i started watching that as well. The whole idea seems a little crazy, but overall the first episode was very well done. They also kept the mood pretty light even after the revelation of what "killing goods" really meant and the history behind the lead character. I just hope they are able to keep that light mood going because the show could easily get really dark given the subject matter.

Edit: Damn animeseason.com is still down will post some of my more recent show recommendations once its back online.

Update:

Here are some recent shows worth checking out. Some have been mentioned already.
Arata Kangatari
Dansai Bunri No Crime Edge
Devil Survivor 2 The Animation
Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince
Shingeki No Kyojin
Suisei No Gargantia

Also a few other series that finished their first seasons recently that might be worth giving a chance. Most people have probably already watched some of these.
Magi
Btooom!
Maoyuu Maou Yuusha
Mondaiji-tachi Ga Isekai Kara Kuru Sou Desu Yo?
Zetsuen No Tempest: The Civilization Blaster
Sword Art Online

Second episode of "The Severing Crime Edge" was an absolute mess. Just a classless infodump. When your show's premise is this bizarre and the plot has this many oddly-named factors, you need to introduce them slowly and meaningfully. Definitely not all at once. A few moments made the whole thing worth it.

Hopefully, this was all necessary so we can spend the rest of the series on "good stuff."

I'm really confused about the fetish thing though. Kiri loves hair. That's fine with me. But why does the older Biyonzaka sister get sexual pleasure from her sister's saline injections? I mean...is it because she loves needles, because they're into twincest, or because she's been injected so many times that it makes her orgasm instead of knocking her out? Most importantly, which is more disgusting?

JoJo makes a good video game. As far as I'm concerned, that's it.

All the stuff I like best is from the 80's and early to mid-90's. I just can't seem to enjoy much that's newer. As I get older I like less and less anime, though the classic, truly awesome stuff does remain truly awesome.

I've felt this as well. However, there are definitely new shows now and then that keep me into it (like Jojo for example). I think a lot of it is that after a certain point, your tastes start to get more and more specific so you become less willing to stick with things that don't really hit the mark for you. That coupled with the changing trends in anime we've seen since the 90's can make an older anime fan feel really out of place in the modern scene (at least, that's how I'm starting to feel).

You do realize JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is from the 80s, right? You're fooling yourself if you think the new adaptation is automatically bad because it came out in 2013. It's one of the best manga to anime adaptations ever.

I've read a lot of the JoJo manga. Wasn't a big fan. Doesn't matter how new or old JoJo is, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be my thing.

I think you've hit this right on the head. The stuff I like I still REALLY like, just as much as I always did, but I have a lot less patience these days with stuff that doesn't hit that sweet spot. When I was younger I was willing to watch quite a lot even if it wasn't my favorite. These days I don't want to bother with it unless it is fantastic. The only recent show I've seen I really liked was Macross Frontier, and I think that was more for the spectacle than the story, necessarily.

I'd wager that many of us here are primarily into older anime. But similar to how we still get games in today's stagnant and over populated market that are great, some great anime still pops up here and there. It's few and far between, suffocated by mountains of moeblob and trillion episode shounen, but there is still quality anime. It sounds like you aren't really interested in bothering to look for it though. I'm almost exclusively into 70s-80s anime myself so I hear where you're coming from, yet some of the best watches I've ever had have been with rather modern anime.

Watched akira for the first time. I can't believe i've never seen this movie. It was so incredible. It really is landmark film. Hard to believe that it is over 20 years old to be honest.
