My D material is always free.

Honestly, 16.7 million is a made up number by some crappy fake math equation. And such a perfectly rounded number at that. Not 16,753,212...No no. 16.7 million.

Marketing garbage.
Uh, Mr. Popo is serious. 24-bit color is a very real thing.

And yes, 16.7 million is rounded.
Usually, true color is defined to mean at least 256 shades of red, green, and blue, for a total of at least 16,777,216 color variations. The human eye can discriminate up to ten million colors.[5]

I'm colorblind. Are y'all really seeing ~*millions of colors*~ on a Sega Saturn?

How about a ZX Spectrum... What's that have - like, four colors?

That's ridiculous, even if "true".

Why add an extra 6.7+million colors that the human eye cannot detect? And can our tv's even show 16.7+ million colors and did any, any game on the system display more than a few hundred thousand colors?

"It can show 16.7 million colors, even though almost 7 million of those colors you can't detect".

And I still say "16.7 DISTINCT colors is complete bullshit". See the available font colors on the right? Not even all of those even look distinct.

There's this thing called physics, where we can generate that many distinct wavelengths. You might not perceive them, but they exist. Sort of like how red-green color blind people can't distinguish between the two colors, but they're still distinct.

It's not like they sat there and "added" colors. It's just to do with how computers address things. 16-bit addressing doesn't give enough of a gamut to display photos correctly, so they just moved up to 24-bit, which gives more than enough room.

Do you know anything about hex values and the like? 24-bit means that Red, Green, and Blue all get 256 shades to choose from, 8-bits (1 byte) each. Step down from that into 16-bit color or less, and each primary color gets only a fraction of those available shades.

All those colors and shades that don't seem distinct to you? Those are needed for smooth color transitions. They're more important than you think.

I've heard of physics before.

There also this thing called common sense. The human eye cannot detect 16.7 million "distinct" colors, making that claim silly. Distinct to a computer? Sure. Distinct to the human eye? No way.

No idea why I even have to point that out.

The plain fact is that the computer is still rendering 16.7 million colors. And what's distinct to your eye is different from what's distinct to my eye or Dave's eye.

What about a dog whistle that advertises "most dog whistles operate at 23kHz, while ours runs at 54kHz"? You can't tell the difference, so it must be a stupid marketing gimmick, right?

This kid right here can see the 16.7 million colors. All at once or one at a time. DO YOU SEE THE ERROR OF YOUR WAYS?
